Luckily, there’s a way to replace your card when you need it, with our online replacement card service. It’s quick, easy, and free! Now, more than one million people have requested a replacement card through our service, and we’re still adding states to the list of those who can use the online service!

To replace your card online, first you’ll need to log in to or create your my Social Security account. We protect your personal information using identity verification and security features. Your security and protection are what matter most; you can take control of your future with secure access to your information anytime, anywhere!

You’ll also need to meet certain requirements. You must be a United States citizen age 18 or older with a U.S. mailing address, can’t be requesting a name change or any other change to your card, and must have a driver’s license or state-issued identification card from a participating state. We’ve just added Colorado, Montana, New York, and Wyoming to Arizona, Arkansas, California, Delaware (driver’s license only), the District of Columbia, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Nebraska, North Dakota, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin (driver’s license only).

Keep in mind that in many cases, even if you lost your card, you may not need a replacement. In most cases, simply knowing your Social Security number is enough. But if you do need a replacement, we make it easy. Once you log in to your account, you can follow the instructions to request your replacement Social Security card online.

      Hi, Dennis. Thanks for your comment. First, realize that you may not need a replacement card. You will rarely need to show it. Knowing the Social Security number is what is important. To see if you’re eligible to apply for a replacement Social Security card online or to learn more on the process and what documents you will need to get a card please visit our Social Security Number and Card page. Keep in mind all submitted documents must be either originals or copies certified by the issuing agency and must (unless otherwise indicated) have been issued within the last two years. We cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies of documents. Once you’ve submitted all the needed documents, it can take up to 10 business days from the date we received the application to mail a replacement card. We hope this helps.

      Hi, Missy. Thanks for your question. You cannot apply for a child’s card online. Generally, when applying for a replacement Social Security card for a child under the age of 18, we consider the parent(s) or step-parent with custody, as the proper applicant. Also realize you may not need a replacement card for your daughter. Knowing her number is what is important. You will rarely need to show her card, but if you need information on how to obtain a replacement Social Security card, visit our Frequently Asked Questions. You will need to present documents proving your identity, your children’s identities and citizenship status (if not already established), and evidence of your relationship to, or responsibility for, your children. Also keep in mind the submitted documents must be originals. You can use birth certificates to prove your children’s age or citizenship. But you cannot use it as proof of identity. However, if you must get a replacement card, you may be able to apply online. If you do not qualify to apply online, then you can apply by mail or visit your local office with required documentation.     New card has not been received that has letters instead of numbers, what is the deadline for that to be accomplished?

    My SSN has been compromised, I was scammed online and gave out my number, what do I do I can’t get though to any one by phone. Do I need a new card? Also I have to change my banking info, please help!

    Okay so I never got my son’s social security card and it’s been over a year. they had told me I was going to get it a month after he was born but I got nothing. So then I called to office and they told me that it was my fault and that I was going to have to be there or send my husband’s and my I’d, our social security cards and our birth certificates in the mail. I know this is wrong for them to ask us for us to send our stuff in the mail I’m tired I’ve been trying everything I can but I haven’t had any luck. We need to get his social security card but this is making it hard I need help and I need it now.

      Hi. If you applied for a Social Security card and have not received it, you will need to contact the local Social Security office where you applied to check the status. You’ll need to bring all of the original documents that you provided to us. We cannot help you with this over the phone. We hope this is resolved soon.
