Earlier this week, The White House issued national guidance regarding Opening Up America Again. We are evaluating this information as it relates to our agency and are continuing to closely monitor the COVID-19 situation across the nation. In fulfilling Social Security’s mission, when we reopen offices to the public, we will provide a safe environment for both the people we serve and our employees.

As we continue to develop our plans, our offices will remain closed to the public for face-to-face service, and our employees will continue to work remotely and provide services to the public. We will provide updates moving forward and post updated information on the status of our offices, by state, at our website. Our agency will provide these updates directly, and please disregard other sources of information regarding the status of our offices.

We will continue to provide the vital service the public relies on. Please visit our website for more information about our services during the pandemic.

I need to get into the social security office to discuss with a person about overpayment. I am having a problem please open soon.

    • V.V.

Hi Pennie, thanks for using our blog. For your security, we do not have access to private information in this venue. We ask that members in our Blog community work with our offices with specific questions. You can call us at 1-800-772-1213 for assistance or you can contact your local Social Security office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.

Open up!Get back to work!! I need to get a replacement S.S. Card.Your online replacement system is BS,and isn’t any help at all !!!! If you were open for business this would not be an issue!!! I cant get a job without a replacement S,S, card !!

    • V.V.

Hi Brandon, thank you for your question. First, realize you may not need a replacement card. You will rarely need to show it. Knowing your Social Security number is what is important. However, if you must get a replacement card, you may be able to apply online. Check out our Frequently Asked Questions web page for details on how to apply for a replacement Social Security card. If you are unable to apply online and you do not want to mail in your documents, which will be returned, you may need to wait for the offices to reopen. You can also call your local office and see if they will mail you an SSN printout instead of a replacement Social Security card. We are unable to process replacement Social Security card requests by phone at this time. Use our Social Security Office Locator to find your local office address. We hope this helps.

When is the Bloomington, Il social security office set to reopen. Aren’t these offices essential businesses? If not, can’t they set up outside like a non essential restaurant is required?

  4. Gutu

please please open social security office, how I can apply college without ssn ,I cannot get anything without this number, please understand our situation…

    • V.V.

Hi Gutu, thanks for using our blog. We continue to process Social Security Numbers and issue cards for certain lawful immigrants, we call these processes Enumeration at Entry (EAE) and Enumeration beyond Entry(EBE).

If these automated processes are not available to you, we may be able to offer an in-office appointment for a new card request based on available staff and office operating status. Please call your local office to see if an in-office appointment is necessary and possible. To contact your local office, please look for the local office telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator under “Social Security Office Information” for the office you select. The toll-free “Office” number is your local office.

Hi, I was given a completely different information from one of your staffs when I tried to apply for ssn. After hearing my visa status, she told me it is “not imperative” for me to get my SSN since I am just a student. When I informed her that I am a health care worker who is doing a residency in the US, she still insisted that no in person interview will be offered. When I asked her to see if she is aware of any office that may offer in person interview, she told me “there is absolutely no possible way.” When I tried to explain to her that some in person interviews were offered (per your reply to Gutu above), she told me “we are gonna put an end to this” and tried to end the conversation.
Please understand the situation. I was having trouble finding a place to live due to the lack of ssn. Not to mention getting a bank account or having my utilities set up. I cannot apply online as I am not an American.
Please let me know what options I have. Any help on how to set up the in person interview is highly appreciated.

        • V.V.

Hi George, we are sorry to hear about your experience. Please continue to inquire with your local Social Security office. Look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal.

You can also submit feedback by visiting our Contact Social Security page. Once there, select the “Email Us” link. This will take you to the “Email A Question to our Support Team” form, where you can complete and submit a compliment, complaint, or suggestion. We hope this helps.

Instead of worrying about entertainment venues, stage one should have been opening the facilities that matter! SSA has parking lots and outdoor spaces, set up some booths and get to processing! This agency is making many bad situations worse!
