Earlier this week, The White House issued national guidance regarding Opening Up America Again. We are evaluating this information as it relates to our agency and are continuing to closely monitor the COVID-19 situation across the nation. In fulfilling Social Security’s mission, when we reopen offices to the public, we will provide a safe environment for both the people we serve and our employees.

As we continue to develop our plans, our offices will remain closed to the public for face-to-face service, and our employees will continue to work remotely and provide services to the public. We will provide updates moving forward and post updated information on the status of our offices, by state, at our website. Our agency will provide these updates directly, and please disregard other sources of information regarding the status of our offices.

We will continue to provide the vital service the public relies on. Please visit our website for more information about our services during the pandemic.

An exact date of opening to the public would be considerate. All the virtual signaling aside- just give a date we will be able to interact with a live human being and not the internet.
    Thank you.

My survivor benefit (spouse) is being sent to a bank in MA while I live in Iowa. This is exactly how ridiculous this is. I cannot change my information online, I’ve tried many times and get locked out.

Is it really that difficult to let us know when the offices will be opening back up?

    • Vonda V.

Hi Dave, thanks for using our blog. If you are unable to process the change online, you can start or update direct deposit by contacting your bank, credit union, or savings and loan association or call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) or you can contact your local Social Security office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.

Is there a time frame when the Social Security field offices will open?

    • Vonda V.

Hi Christopher. Our offices remain closed to the public for face-to-face service. We are still able to provide critical services via phone, fax and online. For more information and to subscribe for updates, visit https://www.ssa.gov/coronavirus/. Thanks.

I am not able to update my drivers license due to my new last name. They state I need to update the SSA first and must give 24 hours for it to process. Unfortunately the SSA is CLOSED. How am I going to update all legal documentation if I cannot even update with SSA with no future opening date. How is the world opening up except for the one place that is requiring me to start with?

    • Vonda V.

Hi Cathy, thank you for using our blog. Check out our Frequently Asked Questions web page on how to change your name. If you do not want to mail in your documents, which will be returned, you may need to wait for the offices to reopen. Use our Social Security Office Locator to find your local office address. We hope this helps.

USCIS allows for the submission of requested documents via their website. How come the SSA is not set up to provide similar options, especially now that your offices are closed (and may remain so if the employees union has its way)? I have a State of FL Real ID, yet the SSA insists that I provide proof of birth via an office visit, supposedly because your agency “doesn’t have access” to that database. How can this be possible when it’s Homeland Security (another federal agency) that came up with the Real ID scheme in the first place? Wouldn’t it make sense (and be more cost effective) to coordinate your vetting process so that taxpayers can get things done without having to go through the hassle of providing proof of birth, citizenship, etc., over and over again for different federal and state agencies? I don’t recall ever encountering any such obstacles when paying taxes, for example. I don’t know about others, but based on my past experiences, I’m simply not comfortable with mailing ANY difficult to replace documents anywhere. You need to either reopen the field offices or enable submission of requested documents via your online portal as soon as possible. The current situation is completely unfair to taxpayers.

Good Morning, with requirements of Real Id SS cards are required. With offices closed a completed form must be mailed in along with Id . For me its a drivers lisc. How can you expect anyone to do that ? Its illegal to operate a vehical with out it.
As for a passport mine in at the State Dept for renewal which isnt renewing passports.
Its about time to open offices . Please this is impacting my life in a dramatic way.

In the Sandusky, Ohio SSA office clearly there is an issue with “work from home”. Either they dont answer the phone or you wait hours and then when a representative finally answers the phone after you’ve gone through a tedious phone looping all they can tell you is to get online. No additional support at all!!!!! We’ve talked to a representative 3 times and that’s the only reply!!!!! The system will not even allow us to get online or even create a new username and password to access. Representatives all act like you are inconveniencing them and dont have time to address your issue. Makes you wonder if they are really diligent ing working remotely. How about some appropriate service and doing a job thoroughly that you are hired to fulfill. How about opening like other government offices and businesses. Save your cut and paste response!

I have had the same issues. Been trying to rectify a problem since the end of March

Every other branch of the government is opening, why does the ssn remain closed. We need new ssn and we can’t because the office chooses to remain closed. We are feel completely abandoned and discarded. You don’t even uodare us on possible dates to give us hope.
