Earlier this week, The White House issued national guidance regarding Opening Up America Again. We are evaluating this information as it relates to our agency and are continuing to closely monitor the COVID-19 situation across the nation. In fulfilling Social Security’s mission, when we reopen offices to the public, we will provide a safe environment for both the people we serve and our employees.

As we continue to develop our plans, our offices will remain closed to the public for face-to-face service, and our employees will continue to work remotely and provide services to the public. We will provide updates moving forward and post updated information on the status of our offices, by state, at our website. Our agency will provide these updates directly, and please disregard other sources of information regarding the status of our offices.

We will continue to provide the vital service the public relies on. Please visit our website for more information about our services during the pandemic.

I need my tax Social Security 1099 earnings from 2016 in order to start getting my taxes filed for the last 3 years . this cannot be done online.

Hi Dianne, thanks for using our blog. To obtain an SSA-1099 from several years past, you will need to call us at 1-800-772-1213 for assistance or you can contact your local Social Security office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.

Hey America, I just turned 18 and my parents claim they don’t know where they placed my social security card and forgot the number. I need these offices to open back up so i can make money and start my life. If the DMV is open why isn’t this office. Any help on how I can get my number sooner?

    • Vonda V.

Hi Rashaad, thanks for using our blog. First, realize you may not need a replacement card. You will rarely need to show it. Knowing your Social Security number is what is important. However, if you must get a replacement card, you may be able to apply online. Check out our Frequently Asked Questions web page for details on how to apply for a replacement Social Security card. If you cannot request a replacement card online, call your local office and request that we mail you an SSN printout instead of a replacement Social Security card. We are unable to process replacement Social Security card requests by phone at this time.

Adding on to the frustrated people here that cannot receive a SSN for someone that they love… From the SSA website “If these automated processes are not available to you, we MAY be able to offer an in-office appointment for a new card request…”. Why even state that if every time we call they say no. I was also suggested to us, by our competent local office, to mail in original documents just to wait a month for them to mail in a letter saying that we needed to come in. I have written multiple emails and haven’t received a single response. Phone calls are just a waste of time. WHAT IS THE SSA DOING TO HELP ITS PERMANENT RESIDENTS? I fought for this country and live my life in order to leave it a better place for my children, but it’s extremely discouraging to see the completely disregard that this government has for everyone else. I hope the SSA actually monitors phone calls so they can see how counterproductive their phone service truly is. Please start taking appointments, at the very least, do something.

At least stop pretending your closure is still about health. Either admit that your closure has more to do with stopping immigrants from getting social security numbers, or just stop hiding behind the virus as an excuse to not open.

My husband has been here in the US legally for three months now, and still cannot get an SSN because it requires a face to face meeting. As you can see in this comments section alone, this is putting so many lives on hold, and for what?

    Please reopen.

I’m not the type to normally write angry comments like this, but this whole situation is ridiculous, we both feel completely abandoned by this country. How can I still have faith in the place I live, if it will not support good honest people?

    • Olivia

I completely agree. Everything else has opened up and Social Security won’t? Limit the number of people, require a mask to be worn, and wipe down chairs. The fact that you guys are one of the last establishments to reopen is ridiculous. People need to continue with their lives with or without coronavirus. OPEN BACK UP.
