Social Security Administration LogoWe want to give you an update on our preparations for returning our employees to local Social Security offices, a process called reentry.

You may have seen a proposed reentry date of January 3, 2022 in the draft reentry plan that we provided to our unions, or in the media. While some executives reentered on December 1, we have not set a reentry date for the rest of the agency.

The best way to reach us is online at SSA.gov, or by calling our National 800 Number or a local Social Security office. At this time, please remember that we can only provide in-person service by appointment only for limited, critical issues. And we continue to hold voluntary hearings by online video and phone. We are taking steps to increase in-person help for people unable to complete their business online or by phone.

We will keep you updated on our reentry process.

I sent my CDR in a few months ago. Will I hear back from SSDI on continuing benefits, or will they just automatically continue?

    • Ann C.

Hi, Kimberly. Thank you for your question. The Social Security Administration reviews cases from time to time to make sure the individuals receiving checks are still eligible to get them. The time it takes to receive a decision on the review varies. The review depends on how severe your medical condition is and the likelihood it will improve. Generally, if medical improvement is possible, we will do a continuing disability review (CDR) approximately every 3 years. If not, we may review it less frequently. If you have further questions, please contact your local Social Security office to discuss your case. We hope this helps.

My representative payee’s wife is leaving him and hes taking it out on me, threatening to resign being my payee like its MY fault she leaving him. I’m an intensely private person and have only a couple friends so I doubt very much I can find someone willing to take it up. If he does do it, what will happen to me?

    • Ann C.

Hi, Christopher. We are sorry to hear that. A payee is appointed by us to manage Social Security funds only. You have the right to receive your own Social Security check unless Social Security believes you are not capable of managing or directing the management of your money. If you have a representative payee because of a physical or a mental disability, in order to become your own payee, you must show us that you are now mentally and physically able to handle your money yourself. You could provide: A doctor’s statement that there has been a change in your condition and that the doctor believes you are able to care for yourself; or an official copy of a court order saying that the court believes that you can take care of yourself; or other evidence that shows your ability to take care of yourself. For more information, visit our Frequently Asked Questions. We hope this helps.

Ok, so when exactly are local offices going to reopen and not require an appointment? The article/post we’re all commenting on said January 3rd but I can’t just walk in to mine at the moment.

I never received my December benifits payment and it is past due for January’s payment as well and last time I was able to get through the agent was waiting for information from a manager and the line disconnected. It is Monday 1/10 and line has already disconnected before speaking with someone and now I am on hold again for over an hour and still no answer

    • Ann C.

Hi, James. We are sorry to hear about your situation. If you do not receive your electronic payment on the scheduled pay date, please contact your bank or financial institution first. If you still need to report a late, missing, or stolen Social Security payment, please visit our Frequently Asked Questions. Please be aware our call volume is higher than normal. We hope this helps.

So I got married back in 2020 and sent in my documents in December to get my name changed. It took them MONTHS to send my stuff back saying I can’t get my name changed -which come to find out is because they lost my passport. I tried for months to get ahold of people to try and find it. But never found. Now it’s 2022 and I still can’t get my name changed because I will not send another ID to them as I was not even reimbursed for having to by a new passport because the shipping package didn’t state “passport” or “Id”. Which why would I want mail thieves to know that’s in my package?

Anyways, good luck even getting ahold of ANYONE at the 16200 dillard dr location, let alone get your documents back.

If everything else can be open, then the social security office needs to be back opened. Two years is way to long for a government agency to be closed.

I withdrew my application to start my Social Security benefit in December of 2019. Ended up getting one check in March of 2020. I’ve been trying to “return” that payment, so I could start my new, higher benefit for 2022. I have records of calling my local and the national SS office at least 12 times trying to get this corrected. Every time my request was sent to processing “high priority” , including in December of 2020 where it was sent “manager to manager” and still nothing. I’ve left messages and received no call back. My husband was recently diagnosed with a serious illness and medical bills are sky high. To add this struggle of trying to get my social security started has been overwhelming at times. The last person I talked to at Social security administration recommended that I should file a “congressional complaint” to get things resolved. I’m not sure how to go about doing that.

    • Kathryn B.

Hi Bridgette, My partner had the same issue, almost to the letter. He contacted his local state representative and after a year it is finally corrected. If he would have been more on top if it I feel it would have been settled quicker so call them and they will settle it quickly and efficiently

    • Ann C.

Hi, Brigitte. We are sorry to hear about your husband’s condition and your situation. Please contact your local Social Security office for assistance. You can ask to speak to a manager on your next call. We hope this is resolved soon.

  6. Barbara

How can I make an appointment at the Danbury office?i didn’t see that option online

    • Linda S.

You have to call the office directly with your urgent matter and an authorized office staff will assign the appointment

    • Ann C.

Hi, Barbara. Social Security offices are currently open only for in-person appointments for limited, critical situations. We are unable to accept walk-in visitors. If you feel you have a critical situation, please visit here for more information. We hope this helps.

  7. Jean C.

I cannot log on to my social security account. The message says that services are not available at this time.

    • Ann C.

Hi, Jean.We are sorry to hear you have had difficulty accessing your account. If you are still unable to access your account or encounter a problem with your personal my Social Security account, please call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. At the voice prompt, say “help desk.” We hope this helps.

    • Linda S.

Try again at a later time. Also SS likes Chrome and IE.

  8. Nichole M.

I was told by my local SS office that my legal name change is not considered a ‘critical issue’ and therefore I cannot be serviced and am not eligible for an appointment. I have waited 7 months and my license may expire before I can get this taken care of (license won’t update name change without SS card) and my taxes will be filed with an incorrect name. This has already messed up my FAFSA. Do I have any options, and are all offices using the same policy or could I travel to another office for service?

  9. Joanne G.

I can’t log into my soc. sec. account. It keeps looping around. What’s wrong with the soc. sec. site?

    • Ann C.

Hi, Joanne. We are sorry to hear you have had difficulty accessing your account.

Government system should be working just like everyone else’s if u have any internet/phone problem contact ur provider. Who provides service for the government websites n phones? Who can fix it, the government. If they open back up the offices there would not be an overload on the internet n phones but in the office, where the lack of workers to do their job has deceased causing the overload. Where ppl lack, process comes to a standstill causing unnecessary chaos.
