    I live in Malaysia, have done for a number of years. I want to set up an online S.S. account but the details I provide don’t allow me to. Is it possible to have an online account set up if I now live abroad?

    • V.V.

      Hi April. Thank you for your question. At this time you must have a U. S. mailing address to create or access your online account. The “my Social Security” authentication system requires address verification as one of the essential criteria for issuing an account. People with APO/FPO/DPO addresses can create an account overseas, but our system does not support registration and account creation for users with a foreign address yet.

      Even though you are unable to create a my Social Security account, you may still file your application online. You can apply online for retirement benefits if you:
      •are at least 61 years and 9 months old;
      •are not currently receiving benefits on your own Social Security record;
      •have not already applied for retirement benefits; and
      •want your benefits to start no more than 4 months in the future. (We cannot process your application if you apply for benefits more than 4 months in advance.)

      We recommend that individuals living outside the United States visit our Office of International Operations home page which provides information to assist our customers living abroad.

        more lies. even if you are using a USA address but trying to sign up from overseas, you cannot bc of the ISPs. lieing to people about their government benefits is unethical and fraudulent.

    I am traveling in Colombia South America and the my social security web site won’t open. is that normal?
    the reason I wanted to log in is I received a suspicious message today from this # 818-457-9328 that said my social security number was canceled.

    • K.O.

      Hi Gerald, thank you for your question.

      As for your suspicious message, keep in mind that we will only contact you if you have requested a call or have ongoing business with us. Recently, scams—misleading victims into making cash or gift card payments to avoid arrest for Social Security number problems—have skyrocketed. Our employees will never threaten you for information or promise a benefit in exchange for personal information or money.

      If you receive a suspicious call like this: 1) Hang up. 2) Do not provide personal information, money, or retail gift cards. 3) Report suspicious calls here. For more information on how to protect yourself, check out our Frequently Asked Questions. We hope this helps.

    • A.C.

      Hi, Sam. Since you are outside of the U.S. you can contact your local Federal Benefits Unit for any assistance related to Social Security benefits. Also, our Office of International Operations home page provides more information to assist our customers living abroad. We hope this helps.

      • Angela

        Why would you direct people to that link? All it tells people is that they can access MY ACCOUNT online from overseas, which you know is fraudulent information. Disgraceful.
