The Treasury Department announced that Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will receive automatic Economic Impact Payments directly from the Treasury Department.  Treasury anticipates these automatic payments to go out no later than early May.

SSI recipients with no qualifying children do not need to take any action in order to receive their $1,200 economic impact payment. The payments will be automatic.

SSI recipients who have qualifying children under age 17, however, should not wait for their automatic $1,200 individual payment. They should now go to the IRS’s webpage and visit the Non-Filers: Enter Your Payment Info section to provide their information. By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment. If SSI beneficiaries in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, they will have to wait until later to receive their $500 per qualifying child.

This is great news for SSI recipients, and I want to remind recipients with qualifying children to go to IRS.gov soon so that you will receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for. I also want to thank the dedicated employees of the Treasury Department, Social Security, and the Internal Revenue Service for making this happen and working non-stop on this issue.

SSI Recipients with Dependent Children Should Still Go To IRS.gov to Provide Their Information

Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries (who don’t normally file taxes) will also qualify for automatic payments of $1,200 from Treasury. These payments are anticipated to start arriving around the end of April.

The Treasury Department, not Social Security, will make these automatic payments to beneficiaries. Recipients will generally receive the automatic payments by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as they would normally receive their SSI or Social Security benefits.

For those SSI and Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, with dependent children, who use Direct Express debit cards, additional information will be available soon regarding the steps to take when claiming children under 17, on the IRS website.

Please note that the agency will not consider Economic Impact Payments as income for SSI recipients, and the payments are excluded from resources for 12 months.

For more information about Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, please see our most recent blog.

The eligibility requirements and other information about the Economic Impact Payments can be found on the IRS website. In addition, please continue to visit the IRS for the latest information.

Hi how r u? I have a question. I have two disabled sons one 18 yr. Old & one 8yrs. Old who recieve ssdi & i am the beneficiary for both of them & they each have different cards & social security has both on file but I’m wondering how are they gonna distribute the stimulus money will it be on one card or on each one & how much will the stimulus be for them? ?

Do you work, file taxes, or claim either one as a dependent?

    • Michelle R.

Do you have income and claim them on your taxes?

    • Michelle

Do you have income that requires you to file a tax return? If so, they are claimed as your dependents, right? They are not eligible for their own payment, and unless the rules have changed again, the 18 year old is too old. 17 and under dependent is $500 per child. Dependent over 17 is nothing. If you don’t file taxes, you should use the non-filers portal for yourself so you can get $1200, plus enter the 8 yr old as your dependent.

Hi Sky, thank you for your question. Treasury expects automatic payments for Social Security beneficiaries no later than the end of April and automatic payments for SSI recipients no later than early May. Please continue to visit the IRS Economic Impact Payments web page for additional details. Hopefully this is helpful.

Okay I have a rep. Payee that deposits money on my us bank focus blue card, I used to have a direct express card, but I was switched to the focus blue card, so will I receive it on my card? Thanks

    • Michelle

Your direct deposit goes straight to an account that has your name on it as the beneficiary. Your economic stimulus money will go to the same account as your benefits do.You have the right to ask them how much money was deposited and spent from that account

I would love to know to

I’m on SSI. I was told last week to file a tax return which I did thru a free tax service so that IRS would have my bank information. Now I’m being told I didn’t need to file a tax return but what’s done is done and can’t be un-done . Now what? As if the IRS isn’t a mess already,, this should really throw them off !!! Guess I’ll just wait till NEXT year to receive stimulus payment for this year. Luckily I can afford to wait that long IF I live that long!!!!!

    • Michelle

That’s what computers are programmed to detect. There is a database of people in your situation that will be matched to the database of SSI recipients. If it detects a duplicate record, it will be merged to pay once per SSN. Likely, this peocess is part of the reason your payments will come a little later because they have to cross reference to avoid double payment.

      • Bob

Thanks Michelle,, very reassuring. Have a great night!!!

        • Michelle

You are very welcome Bob, sleep well.

When a child get ssi .. Do they get the 1200?

    • Michelle

Only adults get $1200. A child’s parent who claims them as a dependent is eligible for $500 for that child. Hopefully you filed taxes and did that in 2018 or 2019?

I read if you receive disability & you was claimed as a dependent on someone income tax, you would not receive a stimulus check, The question I have is does that apply the same if you receive SSI, or does you receive the stimulus check automatically if you receive SSI

    • Michelle

If someone has claimed you on their tax return, the IRS knows that, and if you are a dependent of someone else you are not eligible to receive the money. If you were to attempt to get the money by doing the no -filers procedure, it would ask you if you could be claimed as a dependent, which sends a flag up if they already filed and did so. You also wouldn’t be successful with that procedure because they have your SSN in the system as a recipient of SSI. Therefore you have no way to prove eligibility. Sorry 🙁

If my mom recieves ssi ,she will get $1200? My brother she takes care of on disability also gets $1200? By direct deposit? If that’s how there set up?

    • Michelle

As long as neither of them is claimed as a dependent on someone else’s tax return, yes. They should each get their own… Assuming your brother is an adult.
