Supplemental Security Income Recipients Will Receive Automatic COVID-19 Economic Impact Payments

The Treasury Department announced that Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will receive automatic Economic Impact Payments directly from the Treasury Department.  Treasury anticipates these automatic payments to go out no later than early May.

SSI recipients with no qualifying children do not need to take any action in order to receive their $1,200 economic impact payment. The payments will be automatic.

SSI recipients who have qualifying children under age 17, however, should not wait for their automatic $1,200 individual payment. They should now go to the IRS’s webpage and visit the Non-Filers: Enter Your Payment Info section to provide their information. By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment. If SSI beneficiaries in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, they will have to wait until later to receive their $500 per qualifying child.

This is great news for SSI recipients, and I want to remind recipients with qualifying children to go to IRS.gov soon so that you will receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for. I also want to thank the dedicated employees of the Treasury Department, Social Security, and the Internal Revenue Service for making this happen and working non-stop on this issue.

SSI Recipients with Dependent Children Should Still Go To IRS.gov to Provide Their Information

Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries (who don’t normally file taxes) will also qualify for automatic payments of $1,200 from Treasury. These payments are anticipated to start arriving around the end of April.

The Treasury Department, not Social Security, will make these automatic payments to beneficiaries. Recipients will generally receive the automatic payments by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as they would normally receive their SSI or Social Security benefits.

For those SSI and Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, with dependent children, who use Direct Express debit cards, additional information will be available soon regarding the steps to take when claiming children under 17, on the IRS website.

Please note that the agency will not consider Economic Impact Payments as income for SSI recipients, and the payments are excluded from resources for 12 months.

For more information about Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, please see our most recent blog.

The eligibility requirements and other information about the Economic Impact Payments can be found on the IRS website. In addition, please continue to visit the IRS for the latest information.

A friend of mine just received his on his direct Express card still nothing pending on mine just my regular benefits which I am grateful for but having my kids home all day is running up bills and the food bill is outrageous …this is a financial strain…on top of the financial strain of living w a disability and trying to make ends meet. Will I receive a check . And where will it go to me or my payee???

    • Kris

You let someone else control your money when you have your own kid that’s your own fucking problem and your friend who told you they got their money on the DirectExpress card is a liar

      • David M.

Some have received payment through direct express today I know 2 people. They got a pending deposit yesterday and received a deposit at midnight. I saw ones pending with my own eyes yesterday. But I have not received anything so it looks like some of us are just playing a waiting game because there is no where to get information

I dont understand, i work my ass off for 30+ years only to get hurt and end up on ssi, i know im not alone on that. I have direct express and havent recieved nothing yet, our government is unfair and a bunch of freaking liars. Whats so hard about putting the money on the card.

  6. Douglas

I’m on ssi and try said we won’t get our stimulus check til mid May is that true

    • Creal

Yeah if u have to file your dependent that the only way I can see it but if you don’t have dependent and don’t files taxes it should be on there Friday or by the 5th but I’m really praying it will be on may first SSI.

  7. david k.

I also haven’t received anything but reg benefits. sure that by today it would be there. Now we are looking at early May and that’s not what was said for SSD recipients. I have direct deposit and it should be so simple to transfer the $$ , but yet they can get 5 million checks in the mail in a week. THis is a real joke . Once again getting screwed by gov

    • Rebecca L.

I have not received mine yet either and on the Get Payment portal from irs says I’d get by April 29,2020 & we are that day! I get direct deposit and my deposit info was confirmed correctly so…..,???????where it is who knows but I’m glad (not that we did not get it) but I’m not alone today signed out. I pray we all receive it today! God bless.

      • Brenda

My husband got his to day 4/29 but i didn’t get mine we have direct deposit

        • Rebecca

What time of the day did your husband get his? Maybe they are just backed up. I went to look on the portal and said I looked too many times to check payment status got to wait 24hrs. But last time I checked said April 29th. But maybe like I said they are behind and low staff that’s all I can think. We just got to be patient even though people on disability and ssa should have been first priority but I’m praying we all get it soon. ♥️

    • Kris

Same here I recive SSI and no dependants SMH ?

  9. Terri L.

Yes I still haven’t received my and I’m on SSI and ssd why it take so long to deposit money this is crazy

  10. Ty

I have not received anything yet and I am on direct express card I have met in person with someone who receives Social Security disability through a regular bank account and debit card and they have not received anything yet either people saying they are receiving stuff or most likely lying
The fact that you believe the these people is why the government is able to get away with telling you at a later date at a later date it will not be coming this week either so don’t think that it’s going to come on the first

    • Dean A.

I checked the porthole get my payment describe them as they say they put the $1,200 in an account that I do not recognize call Direct Express and they said it was not there but the porthole said it was what do I do
