Supplemental Security Income Recipients Will Receive Automatic COVID-19 Economic Impact Payments

The Treasury Department announced that Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will receive automatic Economic Impact Payments directly from the Treasury Department.  Treasury anticipates these automatic payments to go out no later than early May.

SSI recipients with no qualifying children do not need to take any action in order to receive their $1,200 economic impact payment. The payments will be automatic.

SSI recipients who have qualifying children under age 17, however, should not wait for their automatic $1,200 individual payment. They should now go to the IRS’s webpage and visit the Non-Filers: Enter Your Payment Info section to provide their information. By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment. If SSI beneficiaries in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, they will have to wait until later to receive their $500 per qualifying child.

This is great news for SSI recipients, and I want to remind recipients with qualifying children to go to IRS.gov soon so that you will receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for. I also want to thank the dedicated employees of the Treasury Department, Social Security, and the Internal Revenue Service for making this happen and working non-stop on this issue.

SSI Recipients with Dependent Children Should Still Go To IRS.gov to Provide Their Information

Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries (who don’t normally file taxes) will also qualify for automatic payments of $1,200 from Treasury. These payments are anticipated to start arriving around the end of April.

The Treasury Department, not Social Security, will make these automatic payments to beneficiaries. Recipients will generally receive the automatic payments by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as they would normally receive their SSI or Social Security benefits.

For those SSI and Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, with dependent children, who use Direct Express debit cards, additional information will be available soon regarding the steps to take when claiming children under 17, on the IRS website.

Please note that the agency will not consider Economic Impact Payments as income for SSI recipients, and the payments are excluded from resources for 12 months.

For more information about Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, please see our most recent blog.

The eligibility requirements and other information about the Economic Impact Payments can be found on the IRS website. In addition, please continue to visit the IRS for the latest information.

When will my check be deposited in my direct deposit

    • V.V.

Hi Mary, thank you for your question. Treasury, not Social Security, will be making automatic Economic Income Payments to eligible people. Unfortunately, we do not have information about the exact schedule for these payments. Treasury anticipates these payments to go out to Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries starting around the end of April and to Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients starting in early May. Continue to check the irs.gov/coronavirus page for updates.

Wasn’t able to do the non filers thing cause I filed my 2018 n 2019 cause I worked those 2 years but I also get SSD so I guess I won’t be getting a second stimulus check cause I already got my stimulus check on April 15 of 2,700 I got confused I thought I was going to get another stimulus check for being on SSD but when I read it’s only people who did not file n should file for the non filers who gets SSI n SSD who did not file there taxes n those are the people that went on the website n did the non filers that they would be the ones to get it em I right?

I recieve SSI each month on the DIRECT DEPOSIT CARD. My question is will I get the stimulus payment and my regular monthly benefits as welll?

    • Kelly L.

      Why wouldn’t you?

    • V.V.

I receive SSI and have no qualifying dependents, I filled out a non filer form before I was aware that I did not need to take any further action. My question is, will this cause any problem or delay in my direct deposit payment?

    • Lisa

I did the same thing n had the same question…I’m thinking it won’t effect it at all since all the info on the non filer form is or should be the same info that Social Security has on file.

  6. Di

My son is ten he receive ssi will his stimulus check will come automatically or do i have to do anything plz anyone let me know.

    • Nb

Um trying to find out the same thing.

      • Katie

        My son got his auto

        • Sylvia

Do you claim him n your tax return?

    • Lisa

It’s my understanding since he is so young I’m guessing that his SSI is direct deposited into your bank account so his stimulus payment will automatically go into your account as well

    • V.V.

Hi Di, thank you for your question. Please visit the IRS Economic Impact Payments Information Center to answer your questions about eligibility, payment amounts, what to expect, when to expect it and more. Hope this helps!

    • Terri

A 10 year old will not get a stimulus check.

I would like to take the time to thank the SSA for doing this job for without there dedication we would have been waiting longer than we have! Iam a disabled senior citizen is there a way we could get a date that these funds will be in our direct Express accounts and regular bank accounts. Thank you

    • kathleen j.

Hi Susan, I’m basically in the same position as well, and I also would like to thank the SOCIAL SECURITY ADMINISTRATION for stepping up during this crisis.
Hopefully something can be done about the rudeness and negativity on here, it’s not helping those of us that are coping with this stressful time in our lives.. good luck! Kathy

Even though I have a Rep payee, it was my understanding that we would have to file a Non-filer form. That was before they announced automatic payments to SSI recipients. Wasn’t long after I filed, that they made that renouncement. So, my question is, will I now get in any “trouble” with SSA for taking this action and filing on my own behalf?..This was so confusing and I literally did what I thought I was supposed to do. They told us to file, we filed, then they made it automatic..Sorry to ask such a weird question.

    • Steve P.

They will come and get u. 20 years in the pen. So long sucker.

      • Julie H.

No kidding. They’re looking to arrest anybody for anything but letting prisoners out so they dont catch the virus ?

        • Katie

Inmates that file get the 1200, medical, fed and housing..better than most..it is confusing but just be honest if you get double check return 1.. made same error with daily changes….

        • Sherry F.

Well so far mississippi hasn’t let the first inmate out! They only handed out face mask with there mdoc numbers on them! That’s mississippi!

    • Tamey H.

I did the same. I thought thay may be what was holding up my payment but obviously noone is getting payments. I think we’re ok.

  9. Angella D.

On ssdi STILL HAVEN’T SEEN STIMULUS CHECK. THOUGHT THIS WEEK, NOPE.
    HAVE DIRECT DEPOSIT. ANYONE ELSE?

    • Joel.Henderson

The SS Non-filer deposit is supposedly on Friday. If you did file you might see a paper check already or in the next few days.

    • Lisa

For those of us on SSDI what I’ve been reading says we should start getting checks at the end of April

    • Bec

It’s the 24th the day people with SSI and SSDI and veterans and railroad were suppose to get STIMULUS PAYMENTS according to all the payment time lines online. But No payment on my Direct Express or anyone else I know either… The poorest people should come first…But the Government has always taken care of the Rich. Before us lowly people. It really saddens me!!!!!!!!!

    • Tamey

Get SSDI as well.. still no payment.. only source of income and since im relatively young .. under 50.. get less than $1000 a mo to live on.. sure would be nice ro receive sum extra money like everyone else given recent price increases.. instead of constant waiting with NO answers of any kind from ANYONE at all!!

  10. max p.

    has ANYONE got their payment?

    NOPE

    why?

because its not coming til the very last effing day of April.

    • Chelsey S.
