Supplemental Security Income Recipients Will Receive Automatic COVID-19 Economic Impact Payments

The Treasury Department announced that Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will receive automatic Economic Impact Payments directly from the Treasury Department.  Treasury anticipates these automatic payments to go out no later than early May.

SSI recipients with no qualifying children do not need to take any action in order to receive their $1,200 economic impact payment. The payments will be automatic.

SSI recipients who have qualifying children under age 17, however, should not wait for their automatic $1,200 individual payment. They should now go to the IRS’s webpage and visit the Non-Filers: Enter Your Payment Info section to provide their information. By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment. If SSI beneficiaries in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, they will have to wait until later to receive their $500 per qualifying child.

This is great news for SSI recipients, and I want to remind recipients with qualifying children to go to IRS.gov soon so that you will receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for. I also want to thank the dedicated employees of the Treasury Department, Social Security, and the Internal Revenue Service for making this happen and working non-stop on this issue.

SSI Recipients with Dependent Children Should Still Go To IRS.gov to Provide Their Information

Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries (who don’t normally file taxes) will also qualify for automatic payments of $1,200 from Treasury. These payments are anticipated to start arriving around the end of April.

The Treasury Department, not Social Security, will make these automatic payments to beneficiaries. Recipients will generally receive the automatic payments by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as they would normally receive their SSI or Social Security benefits.

For those SSI and Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, with dependent children, who use Direct Express debit cards, additional information will be available soon regarding the steps to take when claiming children under 17, on the IRS website.

Please note that the agency will not consider Economic Impact Payments as income for SSI recipients, and the payments are excluded from resources for 12 months.

For more information about Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, please see our most recent blog.

The eligibility requirements and other information about the Economic Impact Payments can be found on the IRS website. In addition, please continue to visit the IRS for the latest information.

Hi Mylisha, thank you for using our blog. If you’re referring to non-receipt of an SSI benefit, please contact your bank or financial institution first. They may be able to determine if your direct deposit failed. If you still need to report a late, missing or stolen benefit, call your local Social Security office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. You can also call us toll-free at 1-800-772-1213. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.

        Hi
I have a question? I just changed my payment information today because I didn’t like the direct express card and I changed it through social security he told me I changed it to late but it is only the 16th will it still be on the direct express card?
Thank you have a blessed day and God bless

I checked the website this morning, and received the message: “payment status – not available”.

WHAT!! My wife and I have filed our income tax returns on time for the past 40 + years, and the IRS has had our same checking account information since at least 2010.

I’m afraid this will turn out to be another/typical government fiasco for many of us…

It’s cause SSA people can’t use it yet
I logged in once it refreshed and locked me out for 24 hours that portal to check payment is a joke

    HELLO
I SPOKE WITH SOMEONE WHO WORKS FOR SSA AND THEY TOLD ME THE IRS HASNT EVEN STARTED GATHERING ANY OF OUR INFORMATION WHETHER YOU ARE ON SSD SSI OR WHATEVER. I WAS TOLD THAT ITS GOING TO TAKE ABOUT TWO WEEKS FOR NOW JUST TO START SORTING THROUGH ALL OF THE 1099S AND ANOTHER WEEK TO START SENDING THE CHECKS ELECTRONICALLY AND MONTHS FOR THEM TO START GOING OUT BY MAIL.
THEY TOLD ME ALL THE STATEMENTS BEING MADE ABOUT CHECKS BEING SENT OUT BETWEEN APRIL 17 – 24 WERE BEFORE ALL THE EXTRA WORK OF INCLUDING THE SSI RECIPIENTS WHICH CREATED 4X THE WORK. SO NOW WE ALL HAVE OUR STIMULUS CHECK TIMELINES PUSHED BACK UNTIL THIS TIME NEXT MONTH IF NOT LONGER FOR MOST OF US.
IM SORRY TO BRING THIS BAD NEWS BUT I JUST WOULD RATHER PEOPLE KNOW THE TRUTH AND STOP BELIEVING THESE LYING POLITICIANS WHO ARE JUST SAYING ANYTHING TO APPEASE US.
THE DISABLED ARE GOING TO HAVE TO WAIT FOR WEEKS AND MONTHS FOR THE STIMULUS PAYMENT THAT IS WHY NONE OF US HAVE GOTTEN IT YET. IF PEOPLE WOULD USE THEIR COMMON SENSE THEY WOULD KNOW THAT IF PAYMENTS WERE GOING OUT TOMORROW SURELY SOMEONE WOULD ALREADY HAVE IT EARLY. THEY DONT BECAUSE IT ISNT GOING OUT TOMORROW.
THE BEST THING FOR US DISABLED FOLKS TO DO IS FORGET ABOUT THIS STIMULUS CHECK FOR A FEW WEEKS AND BE HONEST WITH OURSELVES THAT THESE PEOPLE COULD CARE LESS ABOUT MAKING US A PRIORITY. GOD BLESS.

    • Gerald

      You’re spot on honestly
They dodge every question on here that relates to giving a date
The worst part about SSDI they knew for at least a month how they were gonna handle SSDI cases

    • Jessie

You’re annoying. But I have to agree this time.

I am leaving this blog, I am not chasing and running around in circles anymore. One site says to do this, another says to do that. Then we hear……. OH YOU SHOULDNT HAVE DONE THAT YOU MESSED UP
I just can’t take this anymore.
I have social security retirement. I get a form every year. I was told I didn’thave to do anything. Half the shit on irs doesn’t work. SSA just keeps replying with generic messages, dumping us off at irs.gov, where they are no help either. I have 2 neighbors that received their deposits in the bank yesterday. One is retired, the other is disabled, but they both file taxes every year.

It will come when it comes. And by right, they should not be forcing us to do ANYTHING in order to receive it. Not without informing us through official SNAIL MAIL. Not everyone has a computer.

      Goodbye and good luck

  5. Annsmith

I have a question for who can ever answer. Will minor children who receive ssi get that payment as well? I told myself no because it’s a minor. But it doesn’t hurt to ask a question you want an answer to. Thank you to whomever responds.

If it is your child you have to go file a non filer claim on the IRS website so you can claim the extra 500 for that child

  6. No S.

Gotta love this administration, government, whatever.

“Recipients will generally receive” again ‘vague speak’. Generally receive? You mean some/many/all are going to be SOL?

“These payments are anticipated to start arriving around the end of April.”
‘anticipate’, love that word, “something that will or might happen in the future”.
I think the keyword here is ‘might’. Again vague.

“For more information about Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, please see our most recent blog.”

“See our most recent blog” the link brings you back to a April 10th blog post and I don’t know what you would call it, I guess just a general cockup of a webpage designed for phone users, or blame it on the new HTML5?

Hey Social Security buy a clue, I just went over to pingdom(dot)com and checked, us computer users are still leading the internet with devices used worldwide 55.29% vs Obamaphones 41.60%.

I wished I lived in New Zealand, within 2 days of their lockdown they had dispersed millions to their citizens, They had a plan already in place for this.

Hi Phyllis, thank you for your question. Treasury expects automatic payments for Social Security beneficiaries no later than the end of April and automatic payments for SSI recipients no later than early May.

      • Don
