woman sitting on a laptopWe’re always looking for ways to provide you with innovative, quality services, and with our newest online enhancement, we’re proud to be doing just that. Now, if you meet certain requirements, you can file Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and disability applications online at the same time.

You can apply online if you:

  • Are between the ages of 18 and 65.
  • Have never been married.
  • Are a U.S. citizen residing in one of the fifty states, District of Columbia, or the Northern Mariana Islands.
  • Haven’t applied for or received disability or SSI benefits in the past.

If you started another application online before April 1, but haven’t submitted it, you can take advantage of this new service option and submit a disability and SSI application together.

With this update, we are expanding service to customers with limited English proficiency by allowing them to request an appointment online for an in-person claim or teleclaim in the language of their choice.  As we provide this new service in many languages, including Spanish, we are discontinuing the separate Spanish language iClaim option.  Applicants who started and saved an iClaim in Spanish can still enter the portal and complete it for up to six months after the claim start date.

With disability, and now SSI, benefit applications online, we’re providing easier and more convenient services to support you through life’s journey.

This is a pathetic excuse for the customer service that SSA should and would be providing if Congress had not strangled its administrative budget. I called SSA and asked for an appointment at my local office. I was told that all appointments in their appointment calendar were booked. I also asked for the phone number for the local office. When I called my call was dropped without being answered. SSA is in crisis mode and suggesting that people apply online for SSI is just putting a bandaid on a severed artery – no help at all.

I am 67 now and received limited income of my social security benefit, can I apply for SSI, do I qualify to apply for SSI if I only received under $800 a month retirement benefit

    • Sandy

Unfortunately , while you would be able to apply for SSI aged benefits after full retirement age, your monthly income may exceed the income cap for people who get both benefits at the same time. I’m not sure about states who supplement SSI but in those who do not the 2017 cap is $755.

Hi Connie, The monthly maximum Federal amounts for 2017 are $735 for an eligible individual, $1,103 for an eligible individual with an eligible spouse. Some States supplement SSI benefits.
Also, see Income Exclusions for SSI Program for more information. To see if you qualify, or if you have specific questions, please call our toll free number at 1-800-772-1213, Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. and speak with one of our representatives. We hope this helps!

Hi Elizabeth. We pay Disability Benefits through two programs: the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program and the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program. SSI is a needs-based program that provides cash assistance to disabled adults and children who have limited income and resources. SSDI, on the other hand, pays benefits to disabled individuals based on their previous years of work, their earnings and their contributions to the program. We pay disability benefits to people who are unable to work because of a medical condition that is expected to last one year or more or to end in death. No benefits are payable for partial disability or short-term disability. You may find our listing of impairments useful. To learn more about the process we use to decide if you are disabled under our rules, visit our Disability Planner: How We Decide If You Are Disabled. Thanks!

    People,
You can go on-line to social security.gov to obtain all the information needed to apply if meet requirements. However, when a person is in retirement age (66.5 yrs.) They are entitled to collect this money after all, the contributions to social security are mandatory deductions via the individual’s payroll check. And no! This is not welfare.

    • Sandy

Social Security Retirement and Disability benefits are an insurance program to which worker contribute through a payroll deduction. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a federal welfare program funded out the government general operating budget but managed by Social Security.

      • Lisa

That is exactly correct! Thanks for posting that.

Hi good afternoon sir my life is gambling life please gate proses for me

    • A. U.

First off you need ti take an english class at a community rec center or perhaps a tutor. No one will be able to help you if they cant understand you. From your comment it makes no sense what is “gambing?” Or “gate proces?”
Are you an american citizen who has contributed to social security to qualify for benefits?

What 8f you are a widow do you qualify for SSI

    • Paul

      No

      • Sandy

If you are a disabled widow over the age of 50 you can receive a disability benefit.

    • R.F.

The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program is a needs-based program that pays benefits to disabled adults and children who have limited income and resources. SSI benefits are also payable to people 65 and older without disabilities who meet the financial limits. If you are the widow of a person who worked long enough under Social Security, you can receive reduced benefits as early as age 60 (age 50 if disabled).
