woman sitting on a laptopWe’re always looking for ways to provide you with innovative, quality services, and with our newest online enhancement, we’re proud to be doing just that. Now, if you meet certain requirements, you can file Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and disability applications online at the same time.

You can apply online if you:

  • Are between the ages of 18 and 65.
  • Have never been married.
  • Are a U.S. citizen residing in one of the fifty states, District of Columbia, or the Northern Mariana Islands.
  • Haven’t applied for or received disability or SSI benefits in the past.

If you started another application online before April 1, but haven’t submitted it, you can take advantage of this new service option and submit a disability and SSI application together.

With this update, we are expanding service to customers with limited English proficiency by allowing them to request an appointment online for an in-person claim or teleclaim in the language of their choice.  As we provide this new service in many languages, including Spanish, we are discontinuing the separate Spanish language iClaim option.  Applicants who started and saved an iClaim in Spanish can still enter the portal and complete it for up to six months after the claim start date.

With disability, and now SSI, benefit applications online, we’re providing easier and more convenient services to support you through life’s journey.

When will you allow married people to apply online for SSI? Also, when will you allow people that have applied previously for SSI to apply online/

    • Thomas H.

It would be really nice if everyone could use this service that needs it. Also, if there could be an option at the end of the application to upload medical records or other documents that would be a huge help as well. Thanks!!!

      • AKA

If SSA allowed people to submit their own medicals bypassing the medical sources, fraud would rule the day. You sign releases so they can get the information or you can go into the office with your documents. Before you are approved for SSI you must go into the office anyway for an interview. A face to face interview is mandated for all welfare programs.

        • Anna

SS is not a welfare program

          • Paul

SSI is indeed a Federal Welfare program.

          • Cal

Sk what if it is? Is that a horrible thing? To help your citizens that are in dire need? There is more than enough money (government) available to help, the greed @ the top is disgusting &… im just beside myself..

        • Maria

You sign the release so SSA who hired a third party company can query your medical record and find a way to disqualify you for your benefits. That’s why the releases are signed, because SSA searches for a way to cheat people out of their benefits. Except when it’s their own family members of employees who work there.

        • Maria

Face to face interview so the social security employee can judge you and is uneducated on illnesses that can’t be seen.

    • AKA

Once systems are designed to support such applications.

Thanks so much for your questions Thomas. We take the security of the public’s information very seriously, and continually use a proactive approach to improve the security of our online services. We’re always looking for ways to provide you with innovative, quality services, and to further improve the services we offer. Your feedback is greatly appreciated!

Can you tell me if it is necessary to hire an attorney who will be able to guide me to the best possible income benefit or will Social Security be honest and able to help me with that. I want to retire at 62. I am aware that my benefits will be reduced. I also have a State of Florida pension that I can start to collect at that age as well. Will my social security retirement check be reduced because of my state retirement check? Thank you for your response in advance.

        • R.F.

Hi Lisa. Please bear in mind that the decision on when to apply for retirement benefits is a personal one. As is the choice to use a representative when conducting business with Social Security. We can only provide you with the information to help you make the best choice according to your own situation. You can find most of the information you need in our website: http://www.socialsecurity.gov. Also, a pension based on work that is not covered by Social Security (for example, Federal civil service and some State or local government agencies) may cause the amount of your Social Security benefit to be reduced. Please visit our Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) web page for more information. To help you plan for the future, you can use our Retirement Planner and you can also create a my Social Security account to verify your earnings, get your Social Security Statement, and much more. We hope this information helps!

yes in USA always something just bareley disqualifies me from any financial or social benefits
always a catch in this country — its almost humorous

    • Marc

Funny you should say that; apparently you haven’t seen the vast majority of posts complaining about how it’s so “easy” to get disability benefits that anybody who just doesn’t want to work gets them in order to take “hard-working” people’s tax dollars. They think no one should get Social Security disability, that it’s just a “hand-out.” I guess they’d prefer that disabled people just shut up and die already. But then, that’s what Congress and Trump think too, by the way; Paul Ryan even said it in those exact words only two days ago (except for the “shut up” part. He said they should just go ahead and die. The henhouse is now being run by the hungry foxes, and they’re preparing for an incredible feast.

I am sick and need my disability very much. My court date is already set up. I had a stroke and my hearing is bad. I was denied in 2015.

    • Maria

They’ll deny you again. It’s what they do, SSA is a complete fraud.

      • BJ D.

No it’s not a complete fraud. I know you wrote back in Aug 2017 but I just have to comment . Without SSDI I don’t know what I’d do. I have many many medical problems, not complaining, just stating facts. I would NEVER be able to get the excellent medical care that I”ve needed. So stop bashing them…..

I’d highly recommend taking a remedial English class at your local adult education center and then maybe someone would know what you are talking about.

      • Anna

that was neither kind or helpful and should’ve been kept to yourself

        • Paul

He/she should pursue work coveeed by SSA tax to ensure US benefits.

        • Dianne T.

No I agree …. why should this person come to our country and expect us to take care of them ….. come with some skills …… like a good understanding of the English language and a trade.

      • Dianne T.

I agree .. why would you come to this country and expect to be taken care of. You should have learned our language and come to this country with a trade. We are not an ATM for immigrants, there are taxpayers behind those benefits that have to work extremely hard.

      • Patricia r.

        That comment was unnecessary.

How does someone over 65 apply for SSI or Disability?

    • JUNE M.

MY WIFE IS 68 YEARS OLD WITH A PACEMAKER, LOW HEART FUNCTION, UNABLE TO WORK, CAN SHE DRAW DISABILTIY

      • Leslie W.

        Yes she can

      • AKA

Ignore Leslie, once you have reached full retirement age you can’t get disability.

        • Paul

Ditto, her SSA retirement benefit supersedes a SSA disability benefit at age 66 or full retirement age.

          • Sandy

If the countable Disability income is low enough a person could qualify for SSI benefits under the supplemental program for the elderly. The spouses income is part of the equation.

      • R.F.

Hi June. Unfortunately, if a person has reached his or her full retirement age (Currently 66) and is receiving Social Security retirement, they will not be eligible for disability benefits. You may want to check and see if she is eligible to receive social services from the state in which you live. These services include Medicaid, which may help pay for medication that Medicare does not cover. You can get information about services in your area from your local social services office. Or you can visit the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) web page for more information. We hope this information helps.

    • R.F.

Hi Louann. Individuals age 65 or older, will need to complete their Supplemental Security Information (SSI) application at their local Social Security office. Please call our toll free number at 1-800-772-1213 to make an appointment. Representatives are available Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program is a needs-based program that pays benefits to disabled adults and children who have limited income and resources. SSI benefits also are payable to people 65 and older without disabilities, who meet the financial limits. Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits, on the other hand, are based on earnings and are not subject to income and resource limits. For more information on the difference between Social Security disability and SSI, check out our Frequently Asked Questions. We hope this information helps.

      • Maria

SSA in Utica are set on denying claimants automatically. It brings the employees a bigger bonus at Christmas time.

      • Maria

They expect DSS to pay for six months before accepting an application.

  9. Joanna B.

I am already on disability and receiving benefits but I am now divorced and have been divorced since May 16,2017 and I have not been able to make it to a social security office to give the information needed to yall.

    • R.F.

Hi Joanna. Beneficiaries have a legal obligation to report changes, which could affect their eligibility for Social Security benefits. You can report changes by telephone, mail, or in person. But remember, never post personal information on social media. If you are unable to visit your local servicing office, you may call our toll free number at 1-800-772-1213, representatives are available Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Generally, you will have a shorter wait time if you call later in the week. Thanks.

      • Maria

That number connects to a third party that can’t explain anything.

Thank you for your help and support, I depend on IT, peace and love, Doug.
