Social Security Introduces Secure Digital Access to Social Security Numbers
Reading Time: 2 MinutesLast Updated: April 25, 2025
The Social Security Administration (SSA) is taking steps to provide a significant enhancement for my Social Security account holders, by introducing secure digital access to their Social Security number (SSN). This innovative feature is designed to provide the American public with a modernized, secure, and accessible alternative to the traditional physical SSN card.
SSA is committed to improving service delivery while safeguarding Personal Identifiable Information (PII).
The digital SSN feature will allow account holders to conveniently display their SSN, when needed, for reasons other than handling Social Security matters. This enhancement will provide individuals who have forgotten their SSN or misplaced their SSN cards a simple solution allowing them to securely view their SSN online through the my Social Security portal. This will reduce their need for an in-person visit and/or having to wait to receive their SSN card through the mail. They will be able to access it via my Social Security on their mobile devices. This digital feature not only streamlines the process for those who need their SSN but also reinforces our dedication to protecting sensitive information. By providing a secure digital option, SSA aims to reduce the risk of lost or stolen cards and enhance the overall user experience.
“We are proud to offer this new digital solution to our account holders,” said Lee Dudek, Acting Commissioner. “This enhancement reflects our commitment to providing better service to the public while ensuring that their personal information remains secure. We believe that this modern approach will meet the needs of our constituents in a more efficient manner.”
SSA encourages all account holders to take advantage of this new feature, which will be available starting early this summer. For more information on how to create a my Social Security account, please visit https://www.ssa.gov/myaccount/.
Together, we are working to create a more accessible and secure future for all Social Security beneficiaries.

I think this change will make it harder for technologically challenged older people. Providing notices in the blog by current date was working just fine. Why is a brand new article that has pertinent information being moved into a folder without instructing people where to find it? I think I know why.

It’s a nice idea and all but, my only worry is one of Musk’s toy boys getting hold of our info.
We all spent years keeping our SS# safe. And it a shame that the guy who has money can gain infiltrate the SSA whether it’s him, his toy boys or a sympathizer to get our most valuable identities.
I’m an one of several thousands seniors who are really concerned.

This is next to worthless compared to the fact that Elon Musk’s ‘DOGE’ team downloaded our personal information and social security numbers when they occupied the Social Security Administration headquarters. I fear that that information will either end up on the dark web or be monetized by one or more of Musk’s businesses.
Given that Sec of Dec, Pete Kegsbreath, has been caught leaking battle plans and installed an unsecured phone line to let him bypass Def Dept security systems, I don’t see this as an unfounded concern

Great feature and system enhancement but please ensure to include for US Citizens abroad (ExPats);
1) Foreign Enforcement Questionnaire (FEQ) Form SSA-7162-OCR-SM aka “Proof of Life” as current annual international surface mail process is a nightmare subject to ID theft and slow (>60 days) loss of benefits.
2) Ability to access new dependent child SSN as flying to Philippines for face-to-face issue of new child SSN is ridiculous and costly just because of international mail theft. Cannot complete taxes if no child SSN.
3). Allow new portal to be a real two way conversation portal where customers (beneficiaries) can communicate with SSa. Currently only one way from SSA to beneficiaries and calling to SSA for international EXPATS is impossible due to long wait for SSA Representative times or disconnect at significant telephone rate cost.

I’m hoping I’ll be able to use it! At the rate we’re going there won’t BE social security for long. It’s scary for those of us who have low incomes and rely on SS benefits to pay rent!

Who would be crazy enough to link up their SSA on their phone. I won’t even put any banking info or apps on my phone.
