Social Security Applauds Passage of Legislation Providing Historic Tax Relief for Seniors

Two people walking up the stairs in a school settingThe Social Security Administration (SSA) is celebrating the passage of the One Big, Beautiful Bill, a landmark piece of legislation that delivers long-awaited tax relief to millions of older Americans.

The bill ensures that nearly 90% of Social Security beneficiaries will no longer pay federal income taxes on their benefits, providing meaningful and immediate relief to seniors who have spent a lifetime contributing to our nation’s economy.

“This is a historic step forward for America’s seniors,” said Social Security Commissioner Frank Bisignano. “For nearly 90 years, Social Security has been a cornerstone of economic security for older Americans. By significantly reducing the tax burden on benefits, this legislation reaffirms President Trump’s promise to protect Social Security and helps ensure that seniors can better enjoy the retirement they’ve earned.”

The new law includes a provision that eliminates federal income taxes on Social Security benefits for most beneficiaries, providing relief to individuals and couples. It does so by providing an enhanced deduction for taxpayers aged 65 and older, ensuring that retirees can keep more of what they earned.

Social Security remains committed to providing timely, accurate information to the public and will continue working closely with federal partners to ensure beneficiaries understand how this legislation may affect them.

Commissioner Frank Bisignano is a Trump loyalist and was nominated for the job because of his financial contributions to the Trump campaign (and not for any qualification). By referring to the bill as the “One Big Beautiful Bill” it’s quite obvious this article is just another piece of Trump propaganda.

Incorrect information. Social Security benefits WILL be subject to taxes. For some seniors there will be a deduction. A deduction is NOT no taxes on benefits. This is a shameful, misleading blog post, but par for the course with this administration.

Will the voluntary withholding on my social security benefit end automatically or will I have to contact the Social Security Administration to end the withholding?

This is terrible misleading information issued by the Trump administration. The bill does not actually reduce any taxable social security income. While it does provide an increase in the standard deduction for seniors over 65, it applies to all income and not just social security. This article is just an attempt by the Trump administration to make the bill appear to help seniors much more than it actually does.

Well said… these are very misleading claims, indeed most middle class SS recipients will still pay tax on SS and because your SS will still be counted in the individual or married total taxable income calculation many will be shut out entirely… dishonest press releases…very odd this.

First of all, this is not from the Trump administration but your standard convoluted gov agency. If you have had to spend any time dealing with this agency over the years you would already know how useless it is. As for details, after 1600 pages of this fricking bills it comes down to the same thing as any other administration. We all have to wait for the agency’s to make up their own rules.

This was really just a press release, I don’t think it was intended to tell you everything you could possibly want to know about how this will reduce taxes for most seniors receiving their Social Security benefits. There are a lot of articles on line that give you a much better understanding. AARP and Newsweek are a couple you could check out.

Thank you. Your comment is spot on except you do not explicitly call out the lie that there is a provision that eliminates taxes on social security income for 90% of social security beneficiaries. It is disinformation (intentionally misleading), not misinformation (mistake made in reporting the information). And we are paying for the disinformation as taxpayers. So all of us need to speak up and say, No lies from SSA. Contact your elected representatives in Congress and tell them we can’t trust SSA information anymore and this compromises our security as seniors. And be sure to vote in a way that ensures we throw out the bums serving us lies.

This is the most sycophantic article I’ve ever read by a government institution. Well, considering the current times, it’s a pretty low bar. How about this article include more details. Including exactly in detail what this new bill changes from current law to new law regarding specific tax policy and income levels. It’s vague, over simplistic, and misleading. It’s such a shame our government agencies have devolved under this current autocratic administration. We the people own these agencies not DJT. It’s still a representative government and if you were doing your job, you would define details in this so called informative post.

To bad so many people are so gullible to the liar, cheater, Conman sitting in the White House.

Did you hear about the Trump supporter that his wife is being sent to a camp? She’s been here since she was five from Ukraine. They have three or four kids the story couldn’t get it right on how many. The husband was asked if he’d take down the flags and all his notices of being a Trump supporter since his wife was being removed from their home away from her children I’m being locked up.
The Husband, obviously a nutcase has said, he will still support Trump.

I’m definitely ashamed of America and these inconsiderate, selfish one-sided people that choose not to be a supporter, for a positive America, with freedom to survive with some kind of assistance.

It has been appalling and nauseating to millions of Americans…..a shame and a sham!!
It sounds as though here the monthly benefit will not change, you will gain the credit when your file your income tax. You will receive a lump sum as opposed to monthly relief.

You are yet another “i hate Trump” sycophant. This is merely a brief outline, not intended to cover all details. If you want all details, look up the Act details. As for “autocratic”, that’s a ridiculous statement considering presidents operate under the rule of the law, that is, the Constitution. This Act was passed by a constitutionally elected Congress, will be signed into law by a constitutionally elected President, in full compliance with the Constitution.

For my husband and I it will, 85% of our Social Security benefits are subject to federal income tax due to receiving over $44000 (married-both receiving SS) limit. Do you usually have to pay FIT? If not it probably won’t affect you, check with your tax advisor when the time comes.

Of course it does. Don’t know your situation and if it’s a bad one I’m glad we have the safety net. But no one should rely on SS exclusively for their retirement. It’s unconscionable for young people in the past or today to not save 20% of their pay.

It doesn’t. Those whose income is only social security don’t pay income tax already. It increases the standard deduction, so some recipients may see a decrease in their overall taxable income.
