Social Security and OIG Hold Annual Slam the Scam Day

Social Security Administration LogoSocial Security scams are an ongoing government imposter fraud scheme. We continue to raise public awareness about Social Security imposter scams during the fourth annual “Slam the Scam” Day on March 9.

For several years, Social Security impersonation scams have been one of the most common government imposter scams reported to the Federal Trade Commission.

We’ve made concerted efforts to address this issue, through extensive outreach and investigative initiatives.

    I have had 6 months of social security taken from me by someone who opened up a bank account in my name and then I reported it to inspector general after telling them I never had a bank account in a different state and they replied back that I got the money in the bank account that I never opened up so I’m out them 6 months of payments

    hi there in the last few weeks of last month and of this month,ive been receiving letters sent to me in the mail and asking for personal psycological evaluation,its from the state of washington saying in the title of the paper department of social and health services,and from those weeks of last month and this month that they have been calling me and sending letter to me,would like to know if all this ive been getting has been a someone impersonating anyone in social security as a false government entity,and telling me that they can turn my benefits off and if i dont call they would make determination and either decide to turn my benefit off,i never call on phone to any entity from social security and never give any psychological evaluation of myself out to any part of social security,im asking does social security ever put out letters like this or make phone calls to people and making the claim for what they say in my letter ive ben getting from them?

      Hi, Drew. Thanks for visiting our blog. If you receive a letter and you are not sure if it is a legitimate request from Social Security, do not give them your personal information. Instead, contact your local Social Security office or call 1-800-772-1213 to see whether we really need any information from you. You can call us Monday through Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., for assistance. You can also contact your local Social Security office. We hope this helps.

    In May 2022, notified via US Mail that 3rd party billing database for an ambulance service used twice by me had been ‘hacked’. On 4 March 2023, received 8 unsolicited COVID-19 Antigen Test Kits via the US Mail. Working with a legitimate business (COVID-19 Test Kit provider), informed that person(s) unknown had ‘signed me (a Medicare recipient) up’ for an ‘auto-subscription’ service. All my Medicare PII was used. Returned Test Kits via mail and cancelled the unsolicited charge and ‘auto-subscription’. This is one of three ‘unsolicited’ services cancelled in less than a year from the database hacking. To ALL Medicare recipients: pay attention to ‘unsolicited freebies’ mailed to you – Test Kits, medical supplies, etc. are NOT free!

    Why do you allow landlords to raise rent every year to match what people on ss, ssi, ssdi get for COLA that year? It’s hard enough to live on what we get. But, the past couple of years including this year with inflation it’s impossible to buy fuel to buy groceries and pay our electric bill every month 😕 which All have gone up (including rent). When are the seniors going to be remembered by our “government”?
