I had $54,000 more earnings in 2019 than I had estimated. They were reported to the IRS in late March. I should see an adjustment in October, but haven’t yet. When might I expect to see it?

    • V.V.

Hi Robert, thanks for using our blog. Each year we review the records for all Social Security recipients who work. If your latest year of earnings turns out to be one of your highest years, we refigure your benefit and pay you any increase due. This is an automatic process, and benefits are paid in December of the following year. For example, in December 2020, you should get an increase for your 2019 earnings if those earnings raised your benefit. The increase would be retroactive to January 2020.

Check out our Receiving Benefits While Working web page for additional details. We hope this helps!

how to get my husbands death benefits

    • V.V.

Hi Phyllis, thanks for using our blog. If you are the widow of a person who worked long enough under Social Security, you can receive full benefits at full retirement age for survivors or reduced benefits as early as age 60. If you qualify for retirement benefits on your own record, you can switch to your own retirement benefit as early as age 62 or as late as age 70.

Check out our Survivors Planner web page for additional details.

How about reporting life changing events? If you get remarried? Or any other life changing events. Why can’t you report that here? Mail in supporting documents if required. How come everything Government is half way thought out?

I am concerned my phone number was placed on my account incorrect. How can I check and get this corrected?

Also I am 62 but have not yet started my social security benefits. I have checked the publications and am not understanding if I am eligible to draw off my husband until I am full retirement age then take my own social security benefits.

    • V.V.

Hi Tammy, thank you for your question. You may be able to get spouse’s benefits but, under existing law, if you are eligible for benefits both as a retired worker and as a spouse, you must apply for both benefits and you’ll receive the higher of the two benefits. This requirement is called “deemed filing” because when you apply for one benefit you are “deemed” to have also applied for the other.

Those that turn 62 before January 2, 2016, meet an exception and the deemed filing rules will not apply if they wait to file at their full retirement age or later. This means they may file for either spouse’s benefit or retirement without being required or “deemed” to file for the other. Check out our Frequently Asked Questions web page for details on Deemed Filing For Retirement And Spouse’s Benefits web page for details.
