      Hi Shannon, we are very sorry for your loss. Typically, the funeral director notifies us of an individual’s passing by contacting the local Social Security office. To verify this information was reported, call our toll free number at 1-800-772-1213 or you can contact your local Social Security office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information.       Hi Alex, thank you for your question. Check out our Social Security Number and Card web page for details on how to apply for a corrected Social Security card. It will also explain what documents your husband will need when applying for a corrected card to change his status. Also, if he does not want to mail in his documents, which will be returned, he may need to wait for the offices to reopen. Use our Social Security Office Locator https://secure.ssa.gov/ICON/main.jspto find your local office address.

    I need to get my father’s (deceased as of October 2019) missing Tax form so I can file his and my mother’s taxes (they filed jointly.) Although I have all the information needed to create a “My Social Security” account and get his forms that way, your website expressly says you cannot create an account for someone else. I am, of course, POA. How can I get his missing Form SSA-1099-R form? Please help. Thanks!

          We’re sorry to hear about your loss, Lauren. The benefit statement is mailed to the last address in our records and is intended for the spouse or executor of the deceased. If you do not have access to the mail at that address, the executor will need to go into the local field office with proof of death and proof of executorship. An SSA-1099 can also be given to someone receiving benefits on the deceased beneficiary’s record such as a spouse, parent, or child of the deceased. Unfortunately, you may need to wait for the offices to reopen. We apologize for the inconvenience.

    I never recieved an activation code. How do I get a new one so I can complete setting up my account?

      Hi James, thank you for using our blog. When you visit a Social Security field office, a representative in the office will verify your identity and issue you a letter containing an activation code. You can use the activation code to complete the creation of your my Social Security account. Select “Finish Setting Up Your Account” and enter the information requested, including the account activation code. If you have not received an activation code, you click on Create New Account to get started. We hope this helps.
