I can not find my original SS card. When I try to create an online account (I live in Maryland) the system replies that it cannot create an account for my SS number. I am 77 and do not receive SS benefits but I am registered in Medicare. I am a retired Federal employee. What should I do to get a replacement card?

Hi, David. First, realize that you may not need a replacement card. You will rarely need to show it. Knowing the Social Security number is what is important. To see if you’re eligible to apply for a replacement Social Security card online or to learn more on the process and what documents you will need to get a card please visit our Social Security Number and Card page. Keep in mind all submitted documents must be either originals or copies certified by the issuing agency and must (unless otherwise indicated) have been issued within the last two years. We cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies of documents. Once you’ve submitted all the needed documents, it can take up to 10 business days from the date we received the application to mail a replacement card. We hope this helps.

My 17 yr old daughter lost her school i.d. and SS card (I am so surprised). The only i.d. She has is her birth certificate, and we don’t know what her SSN was. We still live at the same address her original card was mailed to. How can we get a replacement?
A.C.
Thanks for your question. Generally, when applying for a replacement Social Security card for a child under the age of 18, we consider the parent(s) or step-parent with custody, as the proper applicant. Remember that knowing her number is what is important. You will rarely need to show her card, but if you need information on how to obtain a replacement Social Security card, visit our Frequently Asked Questions. You will need to present documents proving your identity, your child’s identity and citizenship status (if not already established), and evidence of your relationship to, or responsibility for, your child. Also keep in mind the submitted documents must be originals. You can use birth certificates to prove your child’s age or citizenship. But you cannot use it as proof of identity. We hope this helps.
