Protecting Your Identity is Important to UsWe’re committed to protecting your identity. It’s an unfortunate reality that guarding against the release of your personal information sometimes becomes a necessity. We can help.

In certain instances – like for victims of domestic violence – you may want to block access to your electronic Social Security record. You can request a block by calling us toll-free 1-800-772-1213 or at our TTY number at 1-800-325-0778, if you’re deaf or hard of hearing.

Once you request it, we’ll block any automated telephone and electronic access to your Social Security record. No one, including you, will be able to see or change your personal information on our website or through our automated telephone service. If you change your mind in the future, you can call us and ask us to unblock it after you prove your identity.

In most cases, your Social Security number stays the same for your lifetime. When you show evidence of being harassed, abused, or your life is endangered, we can assign you a new one.

For more information, please read our publicationNew Social Security Numbers for Domestic Violence Victims. You can also check out our post, 10 Ways to Protect Your Personal Information for ways to help us safeguard your information.

Please share this information with your family and friends – and post it on social media.

I’ve been a victim of fraud. Someone has opened five bank accounts in my name in the past year. I have been told I can request a pin from SSA to use as an extra security measure to prevent this from happening. Is this true? Is there another way to prevent my SS# from being used? We do have Norton LifeLock however a couple of the bank accounts that were opened are not protected by them.

    • Ann C.

Hi, Melissa. We are sorry to hear about your situation. If you believe someone has misused your Social Security number to create problems for you, Social Security cannot resolve these issues. But there are several things you should do. You should report the identity theft to the Federal Trade Commission. That website is a one-stop national resource to learn about the crime of identity theft. It provides detailed information to help you deter, detect, and defend against identity theft. You should also monitor your credit report periodically. You can get free credit reports online at http://www.annualcreditreport.com. More information is available in our publication, Identity Theft and your Social Security Number . We hope this helps.

I need to change the bank account that my ss is deposited to. do i need to visit the local social security office or can I do it online and how can I do that.

    • Ann C.

Hi, Karan. If you are receiving Social Security retirement or disability, you can create a personal my Social Security account to change your direct deposit online. If you are receiving Supplemental Security Income, you should contact your local Social Security office immediately. We hope this helps.
