Social Security is committed to protecting and securing the information entrusted to us. We’re constantly looking for ways for you to save time by conducting your business anytime, anywhere, using our online services.
Our online benefits application provides a high level of security and protection for the information you provide. Filing online gives you the freedom and convenience to file for various types of benefits including Retirement, Disability, Supplemental Security Income, and Medicare.
Follow these simple steps to begin:
- Review the information on our Retirement/Spouse’s, Disability, Medicare, or Supplemental Security Income Benefits page to make sure you meet the requirements to apply for benefits online and have the information you will need to do so.
- Create or sign in to your personal my Social Security account.
- File your claim online.
- Check the status of your claim by signing in to your personal my Social Security account.
You should be able to complete and submit your application all at once. But if that’s not possible, you can return to your application and continue right where you left off!
After you’ve completed your application, we’ll also give you a confirmation number to check the status, and information on what to do next. If we are not able to process the request, we will provide specific information on how to contact us by phone or schedule an office appointment.

What is the 2019 Limit amount I can make if I work and I am under fullretiremetn age.(63 yers old)

Why is the Message Center not used to communicate between customers and SSA? Why is the Chat with Representative not available to all? Why is the status of a request ( submitted form) not available via My Social Security? Since not all requests can be made online, why does it take so long for forms delivered vis USPS to be scanned into the system? ( Formed delivered on Dec 3. 2018 still not in the system). Why does the SSA handle applications and adjustments for Medicare? Have to contact 2 different agencies to get answers to questions?

Hello Vernon. If you receive a pension from a government job in which you did not pay Social Security taxes, some or all of your Social Security spouse’s, widow’s, or widower’s benefit may be offset due to receipt of that pension. This offset is referred to as the Government Pension Offset, or GPO.

Hi Grace. Most beneficiaries can check out their COLA notice in the Message Center of their my Social Security account . You will also receive this COLA notice by mail in December. The mailings are staggered. In the future, you will have a choice of online or paper notification.

How do you apply for social security benefits when of age when you live outside the U.S.?
So do I absolutely have to make a costly trip just to interview at a social security office in the United States to receive my rightful benefits that I worked for.?
What if I have to travel in again if the first interview doesn’t cover everything?

Hi Patricia. We’re sorry that you are having difficulties reaching someone by phone. We are currently experiencing higher than normal call volume. Generally, when calling our toll free number at 1-800-772-1213, you will have a shorter wait time if you call later during the day or later in the week. Representatives are available Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Hi Irmgard, thank you for contacting us. Anyone who has Medicare can get Medicare prescription drug coverage (Part D). Some people with limited resources and income also may be able to get Extra Help. This Extra Help will help pay for the costs, such as monthly premiums, annual deductibles, and prescription copayments.
You can apply for Extra Help online. To schedule an appointment or to apply for Extra Help over the phone, contact us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., or contact your local Social Security office.
