Online Bill Payment for Medicare Premiums

man smiling and looking at laptop Social Security is here with tools and information to help you secure today and tomorrow. Did you know that you can pay your Medicare premiums online? If your bank offers the option to pay your bills online, you can use their service to pay for your Medicare premiums bill from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

You, or your representative, must sign up for your bank’s online bill payment process and you can contact your bank directly for assistance. Social Security and CMS are not involved in establishing the online bill pay service with your bank. Before you contact your bank to set up the process, make sure you have the following information available:

  1. Amount of your Medicare premium bill
  2. Account number: Medicare claim number without dashes. You can find this number on the red, white, and blue Medicare card.
  3. Biller name: CMS Medicare Insurance
  4. Biller’s address:

You’ll need to tell the bank how much money to deduct from your account to pay for the Medicare premium. You’ll also need to update the amount with your bank whenever there is a change in the Medicare premium amount. This usually happens in January when CMS announces the new Medicare premium rates. You can find more information at Medicare.gov or CMS’s online bill pay webpage.

Remember, CMS does not charge a fee for processing the electronic payments, but in some situations, a bank may charge their customers a fee for using their online bill payment service. If you have any questions about bill pay, please contact your bank or financial institution directly. You can also visit CMS’s  online bill pay for more information on paying your Medicare premiums.

    I received a letter in the mail stating that you were not taking out monthly insurance payments for drug cost I have new insurance for drug cost threw blue cross and blue shield I want this taken out of my monthly income along with the cost of medicare

    I just switched to mvp advantage plan—$172.20 per month. -I received letter from social security and they said $ 191.20 would be deducted . Called mvp and medicare and they don’t know why’. .Been trying for 2 days to reach sov.sec.but always say call back tomorrow we”re busy. Do they charge to take it out or what.. ? I HAVE complete coverage from FEB retiree policy now but too exprensive.How come ddifference?

    may I have a list of all of my receipts since July 1? aaaaaaaI was in the hospital for awhile and didn’t get them. But it is very important that I have the receipts from July.1. to /september 30. 2017.

    Hi,
    I’ve been trying to pay for my Part B premium online but the only option I have is to set up the payment with my financial institution. I received a delinquent notice and I had to pay it by 11/25/17 or my Part B of Medicare is going to be cancelled 11/30/17. I haven’t had a chance to make the payment because I didn’t understand how the premium worked until I spoke to an independent agent that explained to me in detail how it works. I work from 7 am to 4 pm. So I can’t make it to the nearest Social Security office because I miss the hours of operation for the SS office. I can send the payment via mail but my concern is that my Part B will get cancelled because my premium is delinquent. How am I guaranteed the it won’t get cancelled if I make the payment now that it’s past due? I would like for someone to please contact me. I need some help with this matter.

    I am trying to find out what my medicare premium bill is. I have not received a bill for over a month. I have tried to locate online and am unable to find it. Will I get a bill or statement at some point?

      Hi Mark. If you get Social Security, Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) or Civil Service benefits, your Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) premiums will get deducted from your benefit payment. If you don’t get Social Security payments, RRB, or Civil Service benefits, you’ll get a bill called a “Medicare Premium Bill” (CMS-500).
      Normally, if your premium is late, you’ll get a second bill-notice reminding you to pay your premium. Visit http://www.medicare.gov for more information.

    How do I get a form to change my direct payment from one bank to another

      Hi Patricia, if you already receive Social Security or SSI benefits and you have a bank account, you can sign up for Direct Deposit by:
      •starting or changing Direct Deposit online (Social Security benefits only), or
      • contacting your bank, credit union or savings and loan association, or
      • calling Social Security toll-free at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), or
      Consider the Direct Express® debit card as another viable option.

    When will we get a new statement of the amount we will be getting for the new year? Also how much comes out of SS check to cover are medicare?

      Hi Sheryl. If you’re referring to the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) notices for 2018, these notices are mailed during the month of December. Information about Medicare changes for 2018, when announced, will be available at http://www.medicare.gov.
