man smiling and looking at laptop Social Security is here with tools and information to help you secure today and tomorrow. Did you know that you can pay your Medicare premiums online? If your bank offers the option to pay your bills online, you can use their service to pay for your Medicare premiums bill from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

You, or your representative, must sign up for your bank’s online bill payment process and you can contact your bank directly for assistance. Social Security and CMS are not involved in establishing the online bill pay service with your bank. Before you contact your bank to set up the process, make sure you have the following information available:

  1. Amount of your Medicare premium bill
  2. Account number: Medicare claim number without dashes. You can find this number on the red, white, and blue Medicare card.
  3. Biller name: CMS Medicare Insurance
  4. Biller’s address:

Medicare Premium Collection Center
P.O. Box 790355
St. Louis, MO 63179-0355

You’ll need to tell the bank how much money to deduct from your account to pay for the Medicare premium. You’ll also need to update the amount with your bank whenever there is a change in the Medicare premium amount. This usually happens in January when CMS announces the new Medicare premium rates. You can find more information at Medicare.gov or CMS’s online bill pay webpage.

Remember, CMS does not charge a fee for processing the electronic payments, but in some situations, a bank may charge their customers a fee for using their online bill payment service. If you have any questions about bill pay, please contact your bank or financial institution directly. You can also visit CMS’s  online bill pay for more information on paying your Medicare premiums.

I want to contact my bank re auto pay, however I cannot find my Medicare card. Isn’t the claim number the same as my social security number? If not how can I get the number so I can give it to my bank?
    Thank you.

    • Ray F.

Hi Elaine. If you receive benefits on your own record, your Medicare claim number is your Social Security number followed by the letter A. The letter identifier changes if you receive benefits on someone else’s record.
If your Medicare card was lost, stolen, or destroyed, you can ask for a replacement by using your online my Social Security account.
Please call our toll free number at 1-800-772-1213 for further assistance. Representatives are available Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. We hope this helps!

I have not received my medical or dental bills for January. Should I just write checks without the bill?

My wife’s SSA Benefit based on my account was $129. a month. She was born February 17, 1953. As of February 1 she will be eligible for Medicare Parts A & B.
Part B premium is $134. so she (we) will be billed the difference and her wife’s benefit will stop starting January 2018. All understood. However, we have been notified with billing date of 26 Dec. that she will be billed $27.50 due by April 20, 2018. Please explain the arithmetic behind this since the difference is $5. a month, and what period does the $27.50 cover

    • Ray F.

Hi James. Unfortunately, and because of security reasons we do not have access to personal records in this blog and cannot answer your question at this time. One of our representatives should be able to provide you with an explanation. Please call our toll free number at 1-800-772-1213 for assistance. • James

Didn’t seem so personal. With a difference of five dollars a month, how does the SSA end up with a billing of $27.50 ?

I should have received a bill in the US mail for my Part B Medicare premium. I will not collect SS until July, 2018, so I pay the premiums direct. I can send my premium through my credit union’s bill pay service. But can you tell me if there is a bill (lost in the mail) with my private information on it? I know you need more info to check on this. What phone number shall I call?

    • Ray F.

Hi Marilyn, you can call our toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213, for assistance in your case. I recently enrolled in Medicare Part A & B. When I got my premium notice, I set up the payment thru my credit union’s bill pay service. I entered an incorrect medicare account number (1 incorrect digit) and authorized the payment. I just received another premium notice and realized my error.

I contacted both my credit union and Medicare. All that Medicare says they can do is open an “escalation case” which will take at least 7 calendar days (not counting weekends) for someone to follow up with me.

Since I know the account number that the funds were originally sent to, it would seem to be relatively straight forward to correct this errant payment and apply it to my correct medicare account number. Apparently not.

My most recent statement says that my medicare will be CANCELLED on 12/31/17 if payment is not made.

HELP! What can I do to get this (my) error resolved?

  10. Deborah L.

I haven’t received my Medicare premium bill for January 2018.
It usually arrives around the 8th of the month. When will it be sent out?
