man on laptop We’re with you through life’s journey, putting you in control of your finances and future. Social Security has made requesting or replacing your annual Benefit Statement even easier. The Benefit Statement is also known as the SSA-1099 or the SSA-1042S. Now you have the ability to download it anytime and anywhere you want using our online services. There’s no need to visit a field office.

An SSA-1099 is a tax form Social Security mails each year in January to people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received from Social Security in the previous year so you know how much Social Security income to report to IRS on your tax return.

If you currently live in the United States and you need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, simply go online and request an instant, printable replacement form with a personal my Social Security account.

A replacement SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S is typically available for the previous tax year after February 1.

If you already have a personal my Social Security account, you should access your online account and go to “Replacements Documents” to view and print your SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can save the document on your computer or laptop and email it. If you don’t have a personal my Social Security account, creating a secure account is very easy to do and usually takes less than 15 minutes.

If you’re a noncitizen who lives outside of the United States and you received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we will send you form SSA-1042S instead. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

Securing today and tomorrow isn’t always easy, but Social Security continues to improve our customer service with easy to use online features. Visit our website for more information.

How do I do this for a deceased individual. I have his will, the Trust document identified in the will, and also the amendment that assigns me as the trustee. I need to get his 2018 SSA-1099 to file taxes before April15th

    • A.C.

Hi, Thomas. We’re sorry to hear about your loss. The benefit statement is mailed to the last address in our records and is intended for the spouse or executor of the deceased. If you do not have access to the mail at that address, you as the executor will need to go into the local Social Security office with proof of death and proof of executorship. An SSA-1099 can also be given to someone receiving benefits on the deceased beneficiary’s record such as a spouse, parent, or child of the deceased. If you need more information, call our toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) and ask a representative for assistance. We hope this helps.

We have not received my SSA-1099 as of 2/26/2019 and I am unable to go onto my social security because we (my husband) did not answer the questions correctly. Now we have to wait for 7 to 10 days to get a letter with a password. This seems totally unacceptable! We were trying to use this site to get the above form, and now we cannot enter this site. And the only way to get this is by going onto the site.

    • A.C.

My husband Harry E. Bradley needs a replacement letter of when he got his raise. I want to create an account for him but he wants to receive paper statements. Harry does not use the computer. Can he still receive paper statements if I create an account for him?

    • A.C.

Hi, Michelle. Your husband would no longer receive paper statements if he creates a personal my Social Security account. To receive a benefit verification, he can call us at 1-800-772-1213, Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Or he can contact his local office for assistance. Thanks!

Since I have not received my 2018 SSA1099 yet (Feb.25, 2019), I went online to my account as instructed by “Social Security Matters” and the Social Security.gov/myaccount website to print a replacement copy in case the one SSA advertises it sends out in January was lost in the mail. I clicked on “Replacement Documents” and nowhere online in my account is a 1099 tax form replacement available. Two years ago my 1099 first arrived in the US mail in May and I had to re-submit my income tax. I don’t want this to happen again so it’s on my list to check off when preparing my taxes. But here we go again! It hasn’t arrived nor is it available on line. So what does one do? Simply calculate what I know my monthly benefit is from past SSA letters and include this in my 2018 return? Calling SSA on the phone takes hours on “hold” waiting for a rep. Why is there such a problem??? How can one just get the SSA1099 efficiently???

    • A.C.

Hi, Diane. We are sorry to hear about your experience. Good news! You can click “Get Help” in your personal my Social Security account to “Ask a Question” or click “Talk to an Expert” for a call back for assistance with a replacement SSA-1099. You can also contact your local Social Security office. We hope this helps.
