man on laptop We’re with you through life’s journey, putting you in control of your finances and future. Social Security has made requesting or replacing your annual Benefit Statement even easier. The Benefit Statement is also known as the SSA-1099 or the SSA-1042S. Now you have the ability to download it anytime and anywhere you want using our online services. There’s no need to visit a field office.

An SSA-1099 is a tax form Social Security mails each year in January to people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received from Social Security in the previous year so you know how much Social Security income to report to IRS on your tax return.

If you currently live in the United States and you need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, simply go online and request an instant, printable replacement form with a personal my Social Security account.

A replacement SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S is typically available for the previous tax year after February 1.

If you already have a personal my Social Security account, you should access your online account and go to “Replacements Documents” to view and print your SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can save the document on your computer or laptop and email it. If you don’t have a personal my Social Security account, creating a secure account is very easy to do and usually takes less than 15 minutes.

If you’re a noncitizen who lives outside of the United States and you received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we will send you form SSA-1042S instead. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

Securing today and tomorrow isn’t always easy, but Social Security continues to improve our customer service with easy to use online features. Visit our website for more information.

I did not receive a 2017 SSA 1099 for my husband and need for filing 2017 taxes. He died December 8, 2017.

Is there a way to get this form without going to the office?

    • R.F.

We’re sorry to hear about the loss of your husband, Beverly. In certain cases, we may disclose SSA-1099 information from the record of a deceased person, only to a survivor of the deceased and only if we are able to establish the relationship of the survivor to the deceased based on SSA records. You do need to contact the local Social Security office to make a request for your husband’s replacement SSA-1099. Thanks.

Hello my name is Cindy Lynn Aloi. I have durable power of attorney for my mother Denise Amelie Aloi and am co trustee of her trust. I also have been supervising her tax returns since my father, Anthony John Aloi, passed on 01/11/2011.
My mother is currently residing at The Burlington Health and Rehab facility in Burlington Vermont. This year I did not receive a SSA-1099. Last year it was sent as forwarded mail from her previous address, Pillsbury Manor, an assisted living facility.
This year I did not receive her SS benefit statement. Please inform me how to obtain one as I am running out of tax time!
    Thank you!

Hello Cindy, you may be interested in applying to become your mother’s representative payee.
A Representative Payee is different than having “Power of Attorney”. As a representative payee, you will be able to get a replacement copy of your mother’s Form SSA-1099, also it will make it easier for you in the future to update information on your mother’s record.
You will have to contact your local Social Security office for a face-to-face interview to apply to be your mother’s representative payee.
When friends or family are not able to serve as payees, Social Security looks for qualified organizations to be representative payees. In this case, the nursing facility may consider applying to be the representative payee. Please consider talking with the nursing facility manager or administrator about this important issue, they will contact us if they have specific questions or to understand the facility’s responsibilities. We understand how inconvenient this may be for you, but hope you understand our role in protecting everyone’s personal information.
Please read our publication: A Guide For Representative Payees for more information.
For further assistance or to make an appointment, please call our toll free number at 1-800-772-1213. Representatives are available Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Thanks!

I went online to establish an SSA.My Account. They wanted info from me which is reasonable. They wanted the name of a credit card I applied for in 2014. I had no idea. I don’t usually apply for credit cards as my husband does and I am on them. They wanted the name of my closed mortgage account. My closed car loan account and a bank card. I did not answer the questions as they wanted so they said come back tomorrow..I still will not know the answers. How about some better questions. I need my 1099.
