man on laptop We’re with you through life’s journey, putting you in control of your finances and future. Social Security has made requesting or replacing your annual Benefit Statement even easier. The Benefit Statement is also known as the SSA-1099 or the SSA-1042S. Now you have the ability to download it anytime and anywhere you want using our online services. There’s no need to visit a field office.

An SSA-1099 is a tax form Social Security mails each year in January to people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received from Social Security in the previous year so you know how much Social Security income to report to IRS on your tax return.

If you currently live in the United States and you need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, simply go online and request an instant, printable replacement form with a personal my Social Security account.

A replacement SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S is typically available for the previous tax year after February 1.

If you already have a personal my Social Security account, you should access your online account and go to “Replacements Documents” to view and print your SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can save the document on your computer or laptop and email it. If you don’t have a personal my Social Security account, creating a secure account is very easy to do and usually takes less than 15 minutes.

If you’re a noncitizen who lives outside of the United States and you received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we will send you form SSA-1042S instead. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

Securing today and tomorrow isn’t always easy, but Social Security continues to improve our customer service with easy to use online features. Visit our website for more information.

I am a US citizen living in Vancouver, BC Canada. I need to get a replacement SSA 1099 form for the year 2016 in order to complete my US tax return for 2016. I tried to register for a My Social Security account to download the form but it seems that I have to live in the US to do that. Please advise how I can a copy of this form. It should not be this complicated.

Hi Howard, thank you for your question. At this time you must have a U. S. mailing address to create or access your online account. The “my Social Security” authentication system requires address verification as one of the essential criteria for issuing an account. People with APO/FPO/DPO addresses can create an account overseas, but our system does not support registration and account creation for users with a foreign address yet.

We recommend that individuals living outside the United States contact the nearest Federal Benefit Unit or U.S. embassy in the area for any assistance related to Social Security programs and benefits. We hope this helps.

        How can I get a 1099 form

  2. ronald B.

I am confused I am 100 percent disable and was getting disability and when I reached 62 they put me on stright ss after and now I get my checks by direct deposit . I have not had to file any taxs for maby years due to the small amount of ss I get. Will I have to fill out any forms in order to get this money ? And can J receive a check for my daughter who is living in Russia at this time?

    • Vonda V.

Hi Ronald, thank you for your question. Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability beneficiaries and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients who do not have qualifying children under age 17 do not need to take any action with the IRS. You will automatically receive your $1,200 economic impact payment directly from the IRS. You should receive the automatic payments by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as you would normally receive your Social Security benefits. Treasury expects automatic payments for Social Security beneficiaries no later than the end of April and automatic payments for SSI recipients no later than early May.

Please visit the IRS Economic Impact Payments Information Center to answer your questions about eligibility. Hope this helps!

What form do I use to notify SSA of my full time retirement date from my teaching position.

    • Vonda V.

Hi Frances, thank you for your question. If you’re asking about Social Security retirement benefits, you may start receiving benefits as early as age 62 or as late as age 70. Monthly benefits are reduced if you start them any time before your “full retirement age”. Your full retirement age depends on your date of birth. It may be between age 66 and 67. This could affect the amount of your benefits and when you want the benefits to start.

The Benefits Planner: Retirement provides detailed information about Social Security retirement benefits. We hope this is helpful.

my sister got survivor papers today to get survivor benefits from her husband who passed away in March
2020. They requested a birth certificate would that be hers or her spouse that died.

    • Vonda V.

Hi Carol, thank you for using our blog. The requested birth certificate would be for the widow as benefit eligibility and amount are based on the widow’s age. We hope this helps.

How can I get a 1099 for my deceased mother?

    • Vonda V.

Hi Lori. We’re sorry to hear about your loss. The benefit statement is mailed to the last address in our records and is intended for the spouse or executor of the deceased. If you do not have access to the mail at that address, the executor will need to go into the local field office with proof of death and proof of executorship. An SSA-1099 can also be given to someone receiving benefits on the deceased beneficiary’s record such as a spouse, parent, or child of the deceased. Unfortunately, you may need to wait for the offices to reopen. We apologize for the inconvenience.

I am a representative payee and am a user of the my Soc. Sec. website. I see I can get a replacement or see my personal SSA-1099 by clicking on “replacement documents.” However, I do not see such a link on my representative payee page of the website, and I would like to be able to access my Ward’s SSA-1099 on line. Any suggestions?

    • Vonda V.

Hi Bill. Thank you for using our blog. That service is not available in the Representative Payee Portal. Check out our Frequently Asked Questions web page on how to obtain a replacement 1099. You can also request replacement SSA-1099’s by using our automated telephone service at 1-800-772-1213. You can conduct the automated services 24 hours a day. At the prompt, indicate that you’re requesting a replacement SSA-1099. We hope this helps.

They don’t have one. I have a POA to handle their business needs. How do you recommend I get replacement 1099’s on their behalf in the fastest possible way.
    Thank you for any advice.
