If you tied the knot this summer – one of the most popular seasons for weddings – your big day is over. However, you may have at least one more thing to cross off your “To Do” list.

If you need to change your last name on your Social Security card due to your marriage, you may be able to apply online for a replacement card using your personal my Social Security account.

If you got married in one of 21 participating states, you may be able to complete the process online – without the need to visit a Social Security office.

You must have a valid driver’s license or state-issued identification (ID) card and a marriage certificate from a participating state to complete the application electronically. Current participating states are Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. This list will grow as we work to include more states.

If you were married in one of the participating states and you want to apply online for a replacement card in your new name:

  • Sign in to your personal my Social Security account.
  • Select “Replace Your Social Security Card”.
  • Answer the screening questions to confirm eligibility.
  • Enter your personal information (name, Social Security number, date of birth, and U.S. mailing address).

You should wait at least 30 days after the date of your marriage to request a replacement card. This allows the state time to update its records.

If you got married in another state or the District of Columbia or you are unable to use our online application, visit Your Number and Card webpage. You can start your application online and possibly self-schedule an appointment to visit a local office to show your marriage certificate.

Once you complete your application (online or in person), we’ll mail an updated card to you, usually within 14 business days. There is no charge.

Be sure to let your employer know about your name change so they can update their payroll records, and we can accurately keep track of your earnings.

After perusing your most recent responses and experimenting with the cookie clicker game, I believe I now have a fundamental understanding of how it operates. I look forward to conducting additional tests to determine how I can make everything function. Many thanks to each of you!

I just changed my name and wanted to hyphenate my maiden name and married name. The guy at the SSA office said that it was not allowed anymore. Is this true? I cannot find any info about that rule. Also, does that mean I’d have to get my DL/passport/etc without the hyphen?

I HEARD THAT THE DATES WE GET OUR SOCIAL SECURITY PAYMENTS WILL NOW BE ON THE NUMBER OF THE DATE WE WERE BORN.FOR EXAMPLE, IF I WAS BORN MAY 8L I WOULD GET MY PAYMENT ON THE EIGHTH OF THE MONTH INSTEAD OF MY USUAL DATE, MY RENT IS DUE BY THE THIRD OF THE MONTH. WHAT WILL I –AND MILLIONS LIKE ME DO? THERE WAS NO ADVANCE WARNING!IS THIS ONLY GOOD FOR SEPTEMBER 2024 OR PERMANENTLY? WHAT ABOUT HOSPITALS AND CARE FACILITIES?
ALSO, NO SSI PAYMENTS FOR SEPTEMBER 2025? WHAT ABOUT THOSE PEOPLE WHO RELY ON THEM TO LIVE?
    PLEASE ADVISE,
THIS NEWS IS GOING TO SPREAD LIKE WILDFIRE I WANT TO INSURE I GOT THE FACTS OF THE MATTER CORRECT.

The schedule for Social Security payments hasn’t changed; it’s available at https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10031-2024.pdf

Thanks for reading our blog, Natalia. Before May 1997, Social Security payments were always delivered on the 3rd day of the month. Starting in May 1997, besides delivering Social Security benefits on the 3rd of the month, it also delivers benefit checks on the second, third, and fourth Wednesdays of the month. The three new payment dates are assigned based on the beneficiary’s day of birth. Beneficiaries entitled to Social Security benefits prior to May 1997, continue to receive their benefits on the 3rd of each month. Thanks for your question. For more information, read our blog What Day of the Month Do I Get my Social Security Payment? | SSA. For pay dates, you may find the Schedule of Social Security Payments | SSA calendar useful. We hope this information is useful.

Why are you typing in ALL CAPS. Don’t you know that typing that way means you’re yelling? I guess if you want to yell, go ahead.

Please don’t send offensive emails to millions of people. Typical Biden minion unthinking move. An apology is in order. Why is there not a way to opt out of extremist agenda emails?

Hi Sharon.  Thank you for reading our blog and for your question. If you legally change your name because of marriage or divorce, you can notify Social Security by requesting a replacement SSN card with your correct legal name. You will need evidence of your identity, your new legal name, and name change event. Sometimes you also may need to prove your current U.S. citizenship or lawful noncitizen status. To change your name online, visit our Social Security Number and card page. For more information about name changes click here. We hope this information is helpful.

The Newlyweds picture should be of a Man & Women Couple

R.J., you are exactly correct and that is the first thing I noticed. SSA has some nerve. I am certainly concerned that they would post that pic. But the community in which they are pandering to must be jumping for joy.
