The Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income programs protect some of the most vulnerable people in our society. A successful disability program must evolve and support making the right decision as early in the process as possible. To help us do that, we must modernize the rules and standards we use to evaluate how we determine disability benefits. We are moving forward with a rule change that has been in the works for a number of years and serves to update a more than 40-year-old policy that made the inability to communicate in English a factor in awarding disability benefits. The new rule is effective April 27, 2020.

We are required to consider education to determine if your medical condition prevents work. In 2015, our Inspector General recommended that we evaluate the appropriateness of this policy. Research now shows the inability to communicate in English is no longer a good measure of a person’s education level or the ability to engage in work. The new rule also supports the Administration’s longstanding focus of recognizing that individuals with disabilities can remain in the workforce.

To make the right disability decisions, Social Security disability rules must continue to reflect current medicine and evolution of work. We need to update our rules to keep up with society’s changes.

We owe it to the American public to ensure that our disability programs continue to reflect the realities of the modern workplace. Please share this information with your family and friends.

Ive been on ss disability for 10 years now. It is the only income that I have. I have yet to receive a stimulus check. I have searched everywhere to find out if I’m getting one due to not making enough to file taxes. How in the world do I find out if I am in the bracket of getting that check! I’m unable to work or apply for unemployment, How can I find out if or when I will get my stimulus check, This is totally stressing me out and is not a very good thing for my health.

    • Katherine G.

I have been on disability for 5 years & I received the stimulus payment via direct deposit. Anyone on disability is entitled to receive a stimulus payment. Hang in there!

Nothing but questions about stimulas payment,go on Google and look it up, social security already said they have nothing to do with how the payment’s are made,.
People can not do things on thier own ,when it comes to money people understand it real well,.
Btw you owe child support say bye bye to some of the checko.

Does anyone know if the unemployment stimulus will affect our disability benefits. If we receive the 600 a week stimulus? If so, how will it affect the disability payments

    • Vonda V.

Hi Pam, thank you for your question. If you’re receiving Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits, unemployment insurance income will not affect your benefits and does not need to be reported. However, if you’re receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI), you need to report all of your income, including unearned income such as unemployment. Please note that we will not consider economic impact payments as income for SSI recipients, and the payments are excluded from resources for 12 months.

For more about reporting income, check out the online booklet, Understanding Supplemental Security Income. To report your income, you can call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) or your local Social Security office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.

        So did mine!

        • MARY C.

My benefits were reduced to $121 and I cannot log on to mysocsec.
Last week, I received a letter threatening to stop my benefitsfits if I didn’t answer phone on May 28th. Phone # was weird and not my ssn. I reported it as a possible scam. Then spoke with SS and they told me to mail it back, it was someone else’s letter AND SSN! They told me all was fine with my benefits. Today I checked w/ Direct Deposit. My benefits were cut by over $1300 and no word on stimulus. I cant get hold of anyone to help. I’m only half kidding when I say I’m close to suicide. So frustrating! Can anyone help me?

If you ride child support order and pay every month but have a tax intercept will you still receive your economical impact check
