New Guidance about COVID-19 Economic Impact Payments

“The Treasury Department launched a new web tool allowing quick registration for Economic Impact Payments for eligible individuals who do not normally file a tax return, and also announced that it would begin making automatic payments.  However, for some people receiving benefits from the Social Security Administration—specifically those who have dependent children under the age of 17—it is to their advantage to go to this portal to ensure they also get the $500 per dependent Economic Impact Payment.  I encourage them to do this as soon as possible, and want to provide the following details:

People who receive Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability insurance benefits and who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019 and who have qualifying children under age 17 should now go to the IRS’s webpage to enter their information instead of waiting for their automatic $1,200 Economic Impact Payment.  By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment.  If Social Security beneficiaries in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, they will have to wait to receive their $500 per qualifying child.

The same new guidance also applies to SSI recipients, especially those who have qualifying children under age 17.  To receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for, go to the IRS’s Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info page and provide information about yourself and your qualifying children.

Additionally, any new beneficiaries since January 1, 2020, of either Social Security or SSI benefits, who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019, will also need to go to the IRS’s Non-Filers website to enter their information.

Lastly, for Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability beneficiaries who do not have qualifying children under age 17, you do not need to take any action with the IRS.  You will automatically receive your $1,200 economic impact payment directly from the IRS as long as you received an SSA-1099 for 2019.

For SSI recipients who do not have qualifying children under age 17, we continue to work closely with Treasury in our efforts to make these payments automatically.  Please note that we will not consider Economic Impact Payments as income for SSI recipients.

The eligibility requirements and other information about the Economic Impact Payments can be found at the IRS’s Coronavirus Tax Relief and Economic Impact Payments page.  In addition, please continue to visit the IRS for the latest information.”

Hi Virginia, thank you for your question. If you’re receiving Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits, unemployment insurance income will not affect your benefits. However, if you’re receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI), you do need to report all of your income, including unearned income such as unemployment. Please note that we will not consider economic impact payments as income for SSI recipients, and the payments are excluded from resources for 12 months.

For more about reporting income, check out the online booklet, Understanding Supplemental Security Income. To report your income, you can call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) or your local Social Security office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.

I am 73 years old and have been on Social Security Disability since 1993. I have been married to my wife since 1973 and our children are grown and married. My wife received her $1200 EIP on April 29, 2020. We share the same Direct Deposit at our bank since I first became disabled. Someone on the internet said if you have not received your payment you might not qualify. Can you help me find out why I have not received a check? Thank you.

  6. DEBRA H.

I receive SSDI. I have for 9 years. I have no stimulus money. I receive my SSDI payments by direct deposit.
We were supposed to have our payments the end of April. It is May 9th. There is no one to call, email or contact in any way. It’s beyond frustrating.

Then the government is talking about a second round. Hello? ! Lets take care of everyone that is still waiting for the first one. It’s stressful in a way. I’m just giving up.

I guess we get to file taxes in January to get it. I’m sure there will be another glitch then.

Thanks Debra! My feelings exactly – Round 2? Where’s Round 1?? I’ve been told that the only recourse will be claiming it next tax season, like you said.

Clearly SS Recipients were not a priority. 80 MILLION people got paid before the IRS even got the records froom Social Security. It’s the same payor (US Treasury) for SS payments & EIP payments. They said lower income people would get paid 1st? Yes, AFTER the 1st 80 million other people.

Looks like we’re getting a paper check whether we like it or not. And I plan to “direct deposit” mine into the bank & let it STAY there! Like most of us, I’ve had to learn to live within my means, and I no longer feel obligated to “stimulate” the economy.

  8. Betty B.

When do the direct express people get there stimules check

    • V.V.

Hi Betty, thank you for using our blog. The Internal Revenue Service, which is part of the Department of Treasury, will be making Economic Income Payments to eligible people. Therefore, we do not have a schedule of these payments. You may find the IRS Get My Payment Frequently Asked Questions web page helpful.
