We offer many secure and convenient online services, where you can:

  • Apply for Retirement, Disability, and Medicare benefits.
  • Check the status of an application or appeal.
  • Request a replacement Social Security card (in most areas).
  • Print a benefit verification letter and much more.

Although you can do most of your business with us online, we know that service channel isn’t right for everyone.  You can still count on us by phone.  If you have a critical situation and we cannot help you with by phone or online, we may be able to schedule an appointment for you.

I have waited on the 800- line for over 1 hr. now for a representative to answer. I need some help with a possible password error. If I have not used My Social Security account recently, will I need to reset my password? The representative who helped me 3 days ago was working from home and did not answer that question, but wanted me to try again in 3 days since I was blocked from my account. This is waaaay to much time to devote to a simple question.

Hi, Steve. We are sorry to hear about your experience. If you still need assistance, you can contact your local office. Also, we offer a few different ways to reset your password if needed. For more information, check out our Frequently Asked Questions. We hope this helps!

Trying to help my sister get signed up for Medicare was a nightmare. She doesn’t have a computer, so I applied online for her….She got a letter of denial for SSI. She didn’t apply for that. Finally after several phone calls she got a scheduled call from someone at Social Security who confirmed her information and said she would get her card in 5-10 business days. She got another letter of denial for SSI. But on the day after the 10th business day, she finally got her Medicare card.

Hi, Deborah. We are sorry to hear about your experience. You can submit feedback by visiting our Contact Social Security page. Once there, select the “Email Us” link. This will take you to the “Email A Question to our Support Team” form, where you can complete and submit a compliment, complaint, or suggestion. We hope this helps.

I think that it is ridiculous that you “may be able to schedule” an appointment. If you can shop, transact local government business, go to school, and vote in person, you should be able to transact business in person with SSA. My husband needs a replacement SSN card, but with the state of the USPS is uncomfortable mailing them in. And they won’t accept a clear photo or photocopy. Unacceptable!

I need to remove Medicare Part B from my account

My husband is still working and has insurance for me

    • Ann C.

Hi, Donna. Generally, if you or your spouse are still working and are covered under a group health plan based on that employment, you don’t need Medicare part B until you stop working or drop your health care coverage. However, you should speak to your personnel office, health benefits advisor, or health plan to see what’s best for you. To read more about whether you need Medicare Part B, click here.
If you wish to terminate your enrollment, a signed request for termination and a personal interview is required. Please contact your local office. Hope this helps!

Hello, same problem here. How long is the process for applying new SSN? I am supposed to start my work today but I still dont have the SSN so they are postponing it. I called the office last week, they said I need to wait for their call back. Until now, I haven’t receive any call. Please help.

        • Vonda V.

Hi Mike, thanks for using our blog. If you’ve already applied for a Social Security number and you need status of that application, please contact your local office. Look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.

What about sending papers to set up a direct deposit. I have changed banks and need to transfer. With you office closed how can I send them to you through email or a certain web site that you are offering for important papers.

    • Ann C.

Hi, Candice. Thanks for your question. If you’ve already opened another account, and receive Social Security benefits, you can create a my Social Security account to change your direct deposit online by going setting up a personal my Social Security account. If you need additional assistance, you can contact your local Social Security office. We hope this helps.

The funeral hone, Duker and Haugh in Quincy IL notified you of my husband, Joseph -A. Weibring, passing on July 25, 2020. I need to know what I should do as I get social security also. Please advise. Thank you!

    • Ann C.

Hi, Sandra. We’re sorry to hear about your loss. The amount of your widow’s benefit is based on several factors, including: the earnings of your husband, when he started receiving his benefits, your age, and the amount of your own retirement benefit. We compare your own benefit with your potential survivor benefit. If your survivor benefit would be higher than your own current retirement benefit, you would be eligible for survivor benefits. To learn how much you could be eligible for, please call our toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778). At this time, we do not offer an online application for survivors benefits. You can also learn more information about Survivors benefits here. If you have not reached the required age, you can also visit our page, “Survivor Planner: If You Are The Survivor.” We hope this helps!
