How to Transition Your Social Security Account to Login.gov

Social Security Administration LogoIf you created a Social Security username more than 3 years ago, you will need to transition to a new or existing Login.gov account or use an ID.me account to have continuous access to our online services. We recently announced this news in a press release.

Beginning June 1, 2024, people who sign in to their personal my Social Security account with their username are given the option to transition to Login.gov. This blog provides additional information and guidance to help you with problems you may encounter. We’re also going to provide answers to some of the questions we’ve heard.

Who does this affect?

If you created your free and secure my Social Security account on or after September 18, 2021, no action is necessary because you already have the right setup. If you are among the 46 million people who created an account before September 18, 2021 and use your username and password to access Social Security online services today, you will need to create or use an existing account with one of our two Credential Service Providers (CSP) – Login.gov or ID.me.

Is there a deadline? 

While you can still use a username and password to sign in to your personal my Social Security account right now, this option is going away later this year. At that time, you will be required to have a Login.gov or ID.me account if you want to continue to access your personal my Social Security and our many other convenient online services.

A personal my Social Security account provides tools for everyone, whether you receive benefits or not. You can use your account to request a replacement Social Security card, check the status of an application, estimate future benefits, and manage the benefits you already receive. Why are you making this change?

This change will simplify your sign-in experience and better align with federal authentication standards while providing safe and secure access to our online services.

What do I need to do?

To avoid any disruptions in accessing our online services we encourage you to transition your account now by signing in to your account with your username and password. Our online instructions will guide you through the process of creating or signing in to an existing Login.gov account.

Information about Login.gov and ID.me

Login.gov is your one government account for simple, secure, and private access to participating government agencies. You can use your Login.gov account to access your Social Security benefit information, services, and other information. And you can use that same Login.gov account to manage other government benefits and services. For support, visit the Login.gov Help Center.

ID.me is a single sign-on provider that also meets the U.S. government’s online identity proofing and authentication requirements. You can use one ID.me account to access government and private services. For support – Go to the ID.me Help Center.

    I have an account with log-gov com.
    At very beginning it as if I requested a confirmation number. I did not request one so then I had to identify myself. I do and it tells me I already have account… this going on for months

      Thanks for reading our blog, Adan. You can get your Statement online by creating a personal my Social Security account. With a personal my Social Security account, you can also review estimates of your retirement, disability, and survivors benefits, and check your earnings record. If you have not created a personal my Social Security account and do not receive Social Security benefits, we will mail a paper Statement to you 3 months before your 60th birthday.     This is the most ridiculous website I have ever tried to use. The first time they wanted my credit card number to charge me $5 for information. There is no way to find out information on here. Meanwhile, my son is unable to afford medication or food. I THINK THIS IS DONE ON PURPOSE. If you can’t talk to family services or social security they can just do whatever they want to you.

    This is crazy. If you are making a change, then really make the change – consolidate. Why are you keeping multiple ways to login? Go ahead and consolidate to the same process. Keeping multiple options open is only going to continue causing confusion. Stop.

    I have an account created several years ago and am trying to change to the NEW login. After I go through all of the ID, passwords and other rigamarole, I need to get one last “security check” but SS never calls me back and they do have my correct phone number. 🙁 And calling SS is an impossibly long wait and requesting a call results in not call. Very frustrating!

    I have a simple request: I want a replacement social security card with NO changes to the original card. After multiple attempts my request is denied and I must come into an office for processing. WHY don’t I have an option that explains the cause and a possible ‘reset’ choice???

      Thanks for your question and for reading our blog, Kathy. You may not need a replacement card. You rarely need to show it. Knowing your Social Security number is what is important.     This trouble is with 840,000 USA citizens retired in foreign countries unable to complete and start a NEW START MySSA account using a valid LOGIN.GOV account that is accepted and do open SA.GOV MySSA web page ready to enter data..

    After entering name and Social Security number and FOREIGN ADDRESS ans FOREIGN PHONE NUMBER the application is
    BLOCKED TO FOREIGN RETIRED USA CITIZENS RETIRED AT A
    FOREIGN ADDRESS

    THE SSA application BLOCKS ADDRESS that is not a USA STATE address or not a military APO address and BLOCKS all FOREIGN 10 digit phone number used by USA citizens retired outside the USA!!!!!

    People are forced to use USA family friends, relatives, fake
    forwarding subscriptions to BYPASS NEW MYSSA APPLICATION!!!!

    IT TAKES 6 MONTHS POSTAL MAIL TO REPORT FOREIGN ADDRESS UPDATE OR CHANGE PHONE SIM CARD! What is
    ridiculous is that USA citizen SSA.GOV living retired outside USA borders receive SSA.GOV mail taking 6 months to a year or never bounced around foreign government postal services who do not certify validate delivery after entering a foreign airport. Same for USPS postal anouncement in USA fail proof
    of delivery after entering a USA airport from oversea country!

    Please get SSA.GOV MYSSA programmer to allow foreign address and foreign phone because user applied with LOGIN.GOV security to update new address, birth, death, alive or dead SSA.GOV data etc. etc. MYSSA
