How to Transition Your Social Security Account to Login.gov
Reading Time: 3 MinutesLast Updated: August 23, 2024
If you created a Social Security username more than 3 years ago, you will need to transition to a new or existing Login.gov account or use an ID.me account to have continuous access to our online services. We recently announced this news in a press release.
For step-by-step instructions on how to make the transition, watch this video. We also encourage you to visit our Frequently Asked Questions for Transitioning Your Social Security Username to Login.gov.
Beginning June 1, 2024, people who sign in to their personal my Social Security account with their username are given the option to transition to Login.gov. This blog provides additional information and guidance to help you with problems you may encounter. We’re also going to provide answers to some of the questions we’ve heard.
Who does this affect?
If you created your free and secure my Social Security account on or after September 18, 2021, no action is necessary because you already have the right setup. If you are among the 46 million people who created an account before September 18, 2021 and use your username and password to access Social Security online services today, you will need to create or use an existing account with one of our two Credential Service Providers (CSP) – Login.gov or ID.me.
Is there a deadline?
While you can still use a username and password to sign in to your personal my Social Security account right now, this option is going away later this year. At that time, you will be required to have a Login.gov or ID.me account if you want to continue to access your personal my Social Security and our many other convenient online services.
A personal my Social Security account provides tools for everyone, whether you receive benefits or not. You can use your account to request a replacement Social Security card, check the status of an application, estimate future benefits, and manage the benefits you already receive. To learn more, visit What is an Account?
Why are you making this change?
This change will simplify your sign-in experience and better align with federal authentication standards while providing safe and secure access to our online services.
What do I need to do?
To avoid any disruptions in accessing our online services we encourage you to transition your account now by signing in to your account with your username and password. Our online instructions will guide you through the process of creating or signing in to an existing Login.gov account.
Information about Login.gov and ID.me

I need to create a login.gov account for myself but I used my email address to create my wife’s account and when I attempt to create my account , I’m informed this email is already in use and seem unable to reuse it for myself.
S.S.
Hello, Doug. Thanks for reading our blog. We understand your frustration. However, each person must set up their own Login.gov account with their own personal email address – not an email that you share with someone else. We also encourage you to visit our Frequently Asked Questions for Transitioning Your Social Security Username to Login.gov. We hope this helps.

I have trying to log into my account for several days and have not been able to do so. It seems, since the transition to login.gov things have gone a mucked. The SSA is not transmitting the log on code for it’s site. There is no problem with the login.gov website, I can login to that site without any problems. The SSA site keeps kicking me back to login.gov and we just go around and around. There is no way to reset. It asks to verified your ID and then no solution to solve the problem.
Calling SSA, and wait on the phone for two hours and they can’t offer any solution. Well I guess that’s progress. The site worked great for years until this debacle.

I have been attempting to log in to my social security account, However. when it is prompting me to use either login.gov or Id.me It will not send me the code to log in. I have been trying for several hours. I am new to SSDI and would love if I could sign on and get the info I need. Then after several hours, it finally sent a code for me to enter, after it was entered ,I am then told to verify myself and a few pages of questions appear. Causing me to re-enter my info But still will not allow me into the site. Very frustrating

I am 76 and living in the Philippines trying to understand & employ these computer changes that you’ve developed. I’ve spend hours trying to correctly set up your new secure log in. I finally got in when you wanted to send me a secure code. I live in PH which is 12 hrs ahead of my daughter’s Littleton, CO address & cell number. Your code failed…NOT informed of this. My bank informed me that my SSI# may have been compromised & I have this uninformed delay which may negatively impact this situation. Shame.

I called the main number more than 10 business days ago to set up a video conference. Was told it would take place at 10:30 AM this coming Monday and that someone from SSA would e-mail me a link for the video conference but still no e-mail. I don’t have time to sit on hold for another 2+ hours only to start the process again. It’s ridiculous that we can’t set up or verify an appointment through our online account.
S.S.
We are sorry to hear about your experience, Connie. You can submit feedback by visiting our How can we help? webpage. From there, select the “Email Us” link. This will take you to the “Email Our Support Team” form where you can submit a complaint, compliment, or suggestion. We hope this helps.

What must one do when they are the spouse of an individual who has Alzheimer’s Disease. She had an online account and I was able to get her Benefit Verification document for a Medi-Cal application and then logged out. I then tried to change her mobile number, as her phone is no longer active, using the same login but could not . After trying three times she was frozen out of her account. In the future, will a trip down to SS office be required just to change the phone number or any other business for her account?
S.S.
Thank you for reading our blog, E. We are sorry you are having difficulty accessing your spouse’s account. You can call our “Help Desk” at 1-800-772-1213. After you hear “How can I help you today?” please say “Help Desk” for help to access my Social Security account. The help desk is available to callers between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. We hope this helps.

I Do not do computers or have an email. My husband used his phone email to remake my account. Now I’m mad at him for putting me out there on his phone.
