How to Transition Your Social Security Account to Login.gov

Social Security Administration LogoIf you created a Social Security username more than 3 years ago, you will need to transition to a new or existing Login.gov account or use an ID.me account to have continuous access to our online services. We recently announced this news in a press release.

Beginning June 1, 2024, people who sign in to their personal my Social Security account with their username are given the option to transition to Login.gov. This blog provides additional information and guidance to help you with problems you may encounter. We’re also going to provide answers to some of the questions we’ve heard.

Who does this affect?

If you created your free and secure my Social Security account on or after September 18, 2021, no action is necessary because you already have the right setup. If you are among the 46 million people who created an account before September 18, 2021 and use your username and password to access Social Security online services today, you will need to create or use an existing account with one of our two Credential Service Providers (CSP) – Login.gov or ID.me.

Is there a deadline? 

While you can still use a username and password to sign in to your personal my Social Security account right now, this option is going away later this year. At that time, you will be required to have a Login.gov or ID.me account if you want to continue to access your personal my Social Security and our many other convenient online services.

A personal my Social Security account provides tools for everyone, whether you receive benefits or not. You can use your account to request a replacement Social Security card, check the status of an application, estimate future benefits, and manage the benefits you already receive. Why are you making this change?

This change will simplify your sign-in experience and better align with federal authentication standards while providing safe and secure access to our online services.

What do I need to do?

To avoid any disruptions in accessing our online services we encourage you to transition your account now by signing in to your account with your username and password. Our online instructions will guide you through the process of creating or signing in to an existing Login.gov account.

Information about Login.gov and ID.me

Login.gov is your one government account for simple, secure, and private access to participating government agencies. You can use your Login.gov account to access your Social Security benefit information, services, and other information. And you can use that same Login.gov account to manage other government benefits and services. For support, visit the Login.gov Help Center.

ID.me is a single sign-on provider that also meets the U.S. government’s online identity proofing and authentication requirements. You can use one ID.me account to access government and private services. For support – Go to the ID.me Help Center.

    Login.org will not let me log in to check the status of my social security. I’ll go through the process of logging in, receive a text message with a code to login and it then brings me back to the login page without an error message other than that, I’ve tried multiple times, used confirmation codes to log in, and am still brought back to the login page.

      I am having the same exact issue. I could not find any indication that the site was unavailable.

      Me too! Twice now took hour n half to get in and next time must start all over. Can’t get response from phone call on anything can’t go into an office woappt but can’t get appt. Miss old days. I guess they realize they are working with 80 year olds. Plus it is difficult even when you know what they are saying. Makes me sad!

      Hello Jamee. Thank you for reading our blog. If you are receiving Social Security retirement or disability, you can create a my Social Security account to change your direct deposit online. If you receive SSI benefits, and want to establish or update direct deposit information, please call our toll-free 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. or, visit your local Social Security office for further assistance.     I would like to start receiving my deceased spouse’s social security. When I first filed for social security, the employee suggested that I use my own then, later apply for my spouse’s. It has been a number of years and I would like to make that transition because his earnings were more than mine.

      am I able to apply for social Security disability for my granddaughters who live with me. I am on disability and spousal support. but take care of my 3 girls that see a physiatrist for certain issues and slow in school. there is no telling when or if they will ever be reunited with biological mother. Due to her circumstances. So we went and had a document notorized in Texas before coming to Florida where we reside.

        Hello, Amanda. Thanks for reading our blog. Generally, Social Security can only pay benefits to grandchildren if certain conditions are met.     I have called the ssa.gov 10 or more times and talked to numerous agents and still can’t get into my estimate account . Mind u I truly believe the have tried but I still to this day cannot get into my estimate accounts. HELP!

    I set up access with Id.me — it was easy.
    BUT I CAN STILL ACCESS MY ACCOUNT THE OLD WAY, USING INFO THAT WAS STOLEN IN THE RECENT DATA BREECH!! Ugh.

      Please stop writing this message. ID.me is an a identity provider so info will be not stolen, data breach will happen only if you enter SSN on a phishing website and id.me website and login.gov is 2 different things id.me require ID verification to sign up but login.gov does not require this is because id.me using own verification system while login.gov does not require instead it instead you will be redirected you to ssa.gov website to create online account.

    I have a LogIn.gov account and entered the info. I was sent an activation code and entered the exact 6 digit number that was sent to me but got an error message that said it didn’t match what they sent. I entered the personal info and re-entered the activation code but it still doesn’t accept it. Now what?

    I tried three times to sign in to my old SS account, with the correct user name and password. I get an error message and now must wait 24 hours to try again. How to I transition to the new site and maintain my existing information?

      What does that mean, “not complicated”? That ppl who can’t login are stupid? Because I’m a web developer and the transition is not functioning for me or for others here.
