How to Transition Your Social Security Account to Login.gov

Social Security Administration LogoIf you created a Social Security username more than 3 years ago, you will need to transition to a new or existing Login.gov account or use an ID.me account to have continuous access to our online services. We recently announced this news in a press release.

Beginning June 1, 2024, people who sign in to their personal my Social Security account with their username are given the option to transition to Login.gov. This blog provides additional information and guidance to help you with problems you may encounter. We’re also going to provide answers to some of the questions we’ve heard.

Who does this affect?

If you created your free and secure my Social Security account on or after September 18, 2021, no action is necessary because you already have the right setup. If you are among the 46 million people who created an account before September 18, 2021 and use your username and password to access Social Security online services today, you will need to create or use an existing account with one of our two Credential Service Providers (CSP) – Login.gov or ID.me.

Is there a deadline? 

While you can still use a username and password to sign in to your personal my Social Security account right now, this option is going away later this year. At that time, you will be required to have a Login.gov or ID.me account if you want to continue to access your personal my Social Security and our many other convenient online services.

A personal my Social Security account provides tools for everyone, whether you receive benefits or not. You can use your account to request a replacement Social Security card, check the status of an application, estimate future benefits, and manage the benefits you already receive. Why are you making this change?

This change will simplify your sign-in experience and better align with federal authentication standards while providing safe and secure access to our online services.

What do I need to do?

To avoid any disruptions in accessing our online services we encourage you to transition your account now by signing in to your account with your username and password. Our online instructions will guide you through the process of creating or signing in to an existing Login.gov account.

Information about Login.gov and ID.me

Login.gov is your one government account for simple, secure, and private access to participating government agencies. You can use your Login.gov account to access your Social Security benefit information, services, and other information. And you can use that same Login.gov account to manage other government benefits and services. For support, visit the Login.gov Help Center.

ID.me is a single sign-on provider that also meets the U.S. government’s online identity proofing and authentication requirements. You can use one ID.me account to access government and private services. For support – Go to the ID.me Help Center.

    I CAN’T LOG IN USING MY PASSWORD & USERNAME AS USUAL. IT HAS NOW LOCKED ME OUT!!!! THEN THERE’S A 60 MINUTE HOLD TIME TO TALK TO SOMEONE. HELP!!!!

Call our toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) if you are locked out of your personal my Social Security account, or if you want to change your Multi-Factor Authentication method. Our National 800 number is available Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Please say “Help Desk” at the voice prompt.     The Login.gov and MySocialSecurity account have a major disconnect! After calling the Social Security office for a Bi-language associate we were able to establish that we needed to close her delete her login.gov user name and password and establish a new one. that was fine and we were able to log in with Login.gov but when trying to access her social security account, the exact same issue occurs. It asks if you have an authorization number. My friend did not have it so we checked the box for the answer No. it then proceeds to take all of your personal information and arrives at the conclusion that you already have an account. We are currently stuck in this loop and seemingly have no way out. Can anyone in this administration help? My friend needs access to her account and will be eligible for Medicare enrollment next month. Please send similar experience and solution if anyone has one.

    Im trying to access my pbgc pension info .It asks me to set up an id me account.I enter my email address and it says its already in use .Now what ???

    I have tried logging into my soc sec account. I realize that I need to transition my old account to the new login.gov but I keep getting an email that says “email not found.” I have not changed my email.

    As usual, anything the government has to do with, is a pain. Had to re-enter information a number of times. Then it goes into “sit and spin” – forever – when it verifies your information, it actually never does. Still can’t get on. JUNK that the tax payer is paying for. 🤬

    Login.org will not let me log in to check the status of my social security. I’ll go through the process of logging in, and it then brings me back to the login page without an error message other than that “[I] don’t need more than one account.” I’ve tried multiple times, used confirmation codes to log in, and am still brought back to the login page for social security.

      I don’t believe that someone else is using my Computer to login, it seem like to Complecated to Login, using my own username and password still wrong on the system.

    I have an account Activation code from SS to transition to login.gov
    After selecting terms of service it goes to SS page. No where does it give me a place for the activation code itself. Have tried numerous times

      Same here, I am having a hard time understanding how to sign In now and it keeps blocking me out saying that my password is invalid now. I don’t know why they have to keep changing everything. Just stop.

      Hi, Amanda. Thanks for reading our blog and for your questions. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a needs-based program that makes payments to people 65 or older, and people with disabilities, who have limited resources and little or no income. The SSI resource limit is $2,000 for an individual, $3,000 for a couple. Some resources are excluded, including their home and vehicle. Income includes wages, Social Security benefits, unemployment, and pensions. We don’t count all income.
      If a person lives alone, and has resources worth less than $2,000, and their only income is your monthly Social Security benefit, they may be eligible for both SSI and Social Security – commonly referred to as “concurrent” benefits. To be eligible for both, their 2024 monthly Social Security benefit should be less than $963. That’s the SSI monthly Federal payment rate for an individual plus $20. Generally, the more income they have, the less your SSI payment will be. You’ll find more details in our publication,
