Social Security Administration LogoIf you created a Social Security username more than 3 years ago, you will need to transition to a new or existing Login.gov account or use an ID.me account to have continuous access to our online services. We recently announced this news in a press release.

For step-by-step instructions on how to make the transition, watch this video. We also encourage you to visit our Frequently Asked Questions for Transitioning Your Social Security Username to Login.gov.

Beginning June 1, 2024, people who sign in to their personal my Social Security account with their username are given the option to transition to Login.gov. This blog provides additional information and guidance to help you with problems you may encounter. We’re also going to provide answers to some of the questions we’ve heard.

Who does this affect?

If you created your free and secure my Social Security account on or after September 18, 2021, no action is necessary because you already have the right setup. If you are among the 46 million people who created an account before September 18, 2021 and use your username and password to access Social Security online services today, you will need to create or use an existing account with one of our two Credential Service Providers (CSP) – Login.gov or ID.me.

Is there a deadline?

While you can still use a username and password to sign in to your personal my Social Security account right now, this option is going away later this year. At that time, you will be required to have a Login.gov or ID.me account if you want to continue to access your personal my Social Security and our many other convenient online services.

A personal my Social Security account provides tools for everyone, whether you receive benefits or not. You can use your account to request a replacement Social Security card, check the status of an application, estimate future benefits, and manage the benefits you already receive. To learn more, visit What is an Account?

Why are you making this change?

This change will simplify your sign-in experience and better align with federal authentication standards while providing safe and secure access to our online services.

What do I need to do?

To avoid any disruptions in accessing our online services we encourage you to transition your account now by signing in to your account with your username and password. Our online instructions will guide you through the process of creating or signing in to an existing Login.gov account.

Information about Login.gov and ID.me

Very frustrated with the two-strp verification process. For example, I live in Australia but have a current Arkansas drivers license for verification. But my home address is – obviously – different from that on my license.
But I am not permitted to proceed with this verification!
I am stymied, and don’t know how to get the account information that I want.

In March 2022, I received a pdf file for my 1040 for the 2021. I didn’t have any problem since my CPA always file on time. My CPA passed away from heart attack in April, but I didn’t think anything else since he sent me file and I paid for his service with my signed copy. I paid necessary estimated taxes for the year 2022 until I received from the IRS that I paid estimated taxes but didn’t have hard copy of my 1040. I sent them hard copy immediately though it must have updated at the end of 2022 for the year 2021. Thus my SSA benefit was not updated in the year 2022, nor 2023. Then I had problem with mis-filing 2023 to which I corrected. As I see my SSA Statement today, it is updated all.
My request is when my SSA benefit will be properly updated? It was not updated from the year 2021 to 2023.
I called 800-772-1213, waited 50 min on some days, or even an hour without any personal help. Today I am holding 38:49 min, and still waiting for any answer.
Would you please help me when SSA will update my benefit with last 2 years non-updated benefits?
    Thank you for your help!

I have been trying to transfer to the new login, but get stuck with the endless authentification process.
I live in Australia, but it accepts only USA addresses and phone numbers.
Please help. I need this year’s SSA benefit breakdown.

Greetings, I received a letter form Social Security that said that my part B payments for Medicare would be subtracted from my monthly check beginning in August of 2024. This did not happen. I need this taken care of right away because I do not want to end up losing a whole month of SS because Social Security did not take care of business on their end. Please attend to this immediately.

My husband uses my email address. After linking his account to Login.gov it will not allow me to link mine because we use the same email address. What do I need to do?

Same problem I need to get into his social security account to change the email and no luck. I have my email on both accounts. What a mess. Been using social security.gov for years and no problem now this mess. Why can’t they transition it over.

On two different days, when I tried to log in with my pre-2021 username and password, in order to transition my account to Login.gov, it said that my username or password were not recognized. I tried “forgot password”, but it said that my username, birthdate and SSN did not correspond to an account! What should I do now?

I had the same trouble and had to call the number for Login.gov. I called and I guess this has to do with social security and not a scam. I had tried several different days and no way it would work. I called and the person helped me and walked me through it. I don’t do that much on the computer and it was pretty complicated. She helped me and we got it done. What I don’t understand if we all ready have an account online with social security.gov why don’t they transition it over automatically for us. It told me my email and password wasn’t recognized. This leaves a lot to be desired for a government
      login.
