Social Security Administration LogoIf you created a Social Security username more than 3 years ago, you will need to transition to a new or existing Login.gov account or use an ID.me account to have continuous access to our online services. We recently announced this news in a press release.

For step-by-step instructions on how to make the transition, watch this video. We also encourage you to visit our Frequently Asked Questions for Transitioning Your Social Security Username to Login.gov.

Beginning June 1, 2024, people who sign in to their personal my Social Security account with their username are given the option to transition to Login.gov. This blog provides additional information and guidance to help you with problems you may encounter. We’re also going to provide answers to some of the questions we’ve heard.

Who does this affect?

If you created your free and secure my Social Security account on or after September 18, 2021, no action is necessary because you already have the right setup. If you are among the 46 million people who created an account before September 18, 2021 and use your username and password to access Social Security online services today, you will need to create or use an existing account with one of our two Credential Service Providers (CSP) – Login.gov or ID.me.

Is there a deadline?

While you can still use a username and password to sign in to your personal my Social Security account right now, this option is going away later this year. At that time, you will be required to have a Login.gov or ID.me account if you want to continue to access your personal my Social Security and our many other convenient online services.

A personal my Social Security account provides tools for everyone, whether you receive benefits or not. You can use your account to request a replacement Social Security card, check the status of an application, estimate future benefits, and manage the benefits you already receive. To learn more, visit What is an Account?

Why are you making this change?

This change will simplify your sign-in experience and better align with federal authentication standards while providing safe and secure access to our online services.

What do I need to do?

To avoid any disruptions in accessing our online services we encourage you to transition your account now by signing in to your account with your username and password. Our online instructions will guide you through the process of creating or signing in to an existing Login.gov account.

Information about Login.gov and ID.me

I too am having problems with login.gov “activation code.” I don’t have an activation code. My attempts to verify with my SSN which I know by heart is correct and other personal info have failed. Now I am locked out of my user ID and password combo. I regret signing up for this service. Horrible customer support.

Upon registering with Login.gov I received the following message:

    “Dear GLADYS :
On 08/18/2024, you successfully linked your LOGIN.GOV credentials to your existing Social Security account. Please remember to sign in at http://www.ssa.gov/setup and click “Sign in with LOGIN.GOV” to access your online account.”

My name is not Gladys. What is going on? Is this a glitch in a SSA form letter?

This whole supposed ‘new and better’ system is a nightmare. I did the transition and it now says it cannot recognize my login. I tried using what I know is right and now it has locked me out. No way to contact anyone. The phone system is a nightmare of robots. Trying to email gets me rerouted over to a page full of useless garble. I hate this

Dee E your experience is the same as mine. I’ll add that the agent I spoke to over the phone could not input my data without getting the same block I received at home. Then I went to the SSA office & they attempted 3 times to put in the data and same blocked response occurred. That was three weeks ago and thou I requested the new code as they advised at the SSA office, it did not arrive in the mail. Yesterday I requested a new code. This should be unacceptable. I wonder what percent of individuals are having problems as we are?
An aside: So a robot asks us to verify “I’m not a robot”! weird

I had similar experiences as described above. I have had trouble the last several times that I have tried to access my SS statement. I had previously downloaded my driver’s liscense to Wallet, but do not see it when I open wallet. I was suspicious when I was diverted to ID.web site. A google question just left me more worried. This is extremely frustrating and should come with more support for the aging population. I find it interesting that there is above a comment policy which WARNs us not to post any of the things that this ID site requests most of. If they are hacked we are hurt.

I was looking for help as I keep going around in a loop. Sign in, identify yourself, you already have an account, sign in, identify yourself…..Aaaaaaaahhh! After two hours I get a live agent who said my account should go through now.
Sign in, identify yourself, you already have….Aaaaaahhhhh! But, I see I’m not alone. 📌God Bless America

Pray and ask God to intervene in this country and help its citizens who are being purposely and systematically controlled and blinded by all these various changes perpetrated in order to confuse and frustrate the average U.S. citizen from obtaining what they’ve worked and paid taxed for all their lives! It’s pitiful.
