Social Security Administration LogoIf you created a Social Security username more than 3 years ago, you will need to transition to a new or existing Login.gov account or use an ID.me account to have continuous access to our online services. We recently announced this news in a press release.

For step-by-step instructions on how to make the transition, watch this video. We also encourage you to visit our Frequently Asked Questions for Transitioning Your Social Security Username to Login.gov.

Beginning June 1, 2024, people who sign in to their personal my Social Security account with their username are given the option to transition to Login.gov. This blog provides additional information and guidance to help you with problems you may encounter. We’re also going to provide answers to some of the questions we’ve heard.

Who does this affect?

If you created your free and secure my Social Security account on or after September 18, 2021, no action is necessary because you already have the right setup. If you are among the 46 million people who created an account before September 18, 2021 and use your username and password to access Social Security online services today, you will need to create or use an existing account with one of our two Credential Service Providers (CSP) – Login.gov or ID.me.

Is there a deadline?

While you can still use a username and password to sign in to your personal my Social Security account right now, this option is going away later this year. At that time, you will be required to have a Login.gov or ID.me account if you want to continue to access your personal my Social Security and our many other convenient online services.

A personal my Social Security account provides tools for everyone, whether you receive benefits or not. You can use your account to request a replacement Social Security card, check the status of an application, estimate future benefits, and manage the benefits you already receive. To learn more, visit What is an Account?

Why are you making this change?

This change will simplify your sign-in experience and better align with federal authentication standards while providing safe and secure access to our online services.

What do I need to do?

To avoid any disruptions in accessing our online services we encourage you to transition your account now by signing in to your account with your username and password. Our online instructions will guide you through the process of creating or signing in to an existing Login.gov account.

Information about Login.gov and ID.me

Login.gov is your one government account for simple, secure, and private access to participating government agencies. You can use your Login.gov account to access your Social Security benefit information, services, and other information. And you can use that same Login.gov account to manage other government benefits and services. For support, visit the Login.gov Help Center.

ID.me is a single sign-on provider that also meets the U.S. government’s online identity proofing and authentication requirements. You can use one ID.me account to access government and private services. For support – Go to the ID.me Help Center.

I attempted to transition my account to Login.gov. I followed the instructions and thought I had succeeded. But it took me to a blank page. I came back later and tried to get into my account. It took me to the same blank page. something about hubUi.

I have tried to create a login.gov account several times now and it won’t let me do it because I have had a recent change of address and the “code ” they mailed to my old address can’t be forwarded by USPS by law. The old system does not provide a way to change my address. I even gone to my local SS office and they don’t know what to do either. WHAT A JOKE !!!

This is a horrible change trying to get into the Login.Gov is a ridiculous repeat over and over again and once you do find SSA you have to login to it as you normally would anyway. What a complete waste of time to get the same result. Not user friendly at all. !
Can one just deactivate it and go back to SSA login?

Social Security Has Just Recently Been Hacked! So What Is Being Done About This?
Just like other comments: Your system is wasting taxpayer time… you require me to request a code, you text me the code, I enter the code and your system tells me it is wrong. No it is not. It is your exact code. Rinse, repeat.. in the loop of hell…. how am I supposed to get access to my SS details etc when your system locks me out??
Could Be Why There Is So Much Trouble With This Website.

I suggest everyone AVOID changing over until these Gov idiot get this fixed!
Typical Gov nonsense affecting 46 Million US citizens.
    Why does this happen?
Because they don’t give a hoot about you and me!
All they care about is working as little as possible, no accountability, hiding behind the wall of hell voice automated systems.
And steal all your identity with photos, numbers, addresses, bank accounts etc.
We are at fault for not holding them accountable!
Eventually we will have to stand up for our Constitutional Rights!

I’ve been in the same boat as everyone else in these comments. I’ve been in a constant loop with different error messages each time. Not to mention getting locked out for 24 hours after 3 attempts. I was lucky enough to get an SSA representative on the phone right away. She was very helpful in going through everything step by step. However, she ran into all the same issues I did no matter what I had tried.

Finally, she suggested I go directly to Login.gov’s website and create a new account with them. This was successful but I still couldn’t synch up with my SSA account. I emailed their customer support with the problem. They responded within five minutes with several links to start the process (again). This time, I did have to upload my DL photo for identification purposes. This time it worked. It provides the option to synch up your access to your SSA account. I was in my account in less that 5 minutes. You can always call them at their support number (Login.gov not SSA) but I chose email instead cause if something happens in the future I’ll have the email to refer to. Good Luck!

After getting the code to log in the account it says there is an error and I can’t access. I guess maybe is because so many people are trying to create their account at the same time, and the web is congested? I will continue trying later because sadly today I’ve spent this time and being unsuccessful.

For starters, I don’t want to watch a video to transition my account to login.gov. Just post the step-by-step instructions in a language common to the USA, say, English, for example.
