Social Security Administration LogoIf you created a Social Security username more than 3 years ago, you will need to transition to a new or existing Login.gov account or use an ID.me account to have continuous access to our online services. We recently announced this news in a press release.

For step-by-step instructions on how to make the transition, watch this video. We also encourage you to visit our Frequently Asked Questions for Transitioning Your Social Security Username to Login.gov.

Beginning June 1, 2024, people who sign in to their personal my Social Security account with their username are given the option to transition to Login.gov. This blog provides additional information and guidance to help you with problems you may encounter. We’re also going to provide answers to some of the questions we’ve heard.

Who does this affect?

If you created your free and secure my Social Security account on or after September 18, 2021, no action is necessary because you already have the right setup. If you are among the 46 million people who created an account before September 18, 2021 and use your username and password to access Social Security online services today, you will need to create or use an existing account with one of our two Credential Service Providers (CSP) – Login.gov or ID.me.

Is there a deadline?

While you can still use a username and password to sign in to your personal my Social Security account right now, this option is going away later this year. At that time, you will be required to have a Login.gov or ID.me account if you want to continue to access your personal my Social Security and our many other convenient online services.

A personal my Social Security account provides tools for everyone, whether you receive benefits or not. You can use your account to request a replacement Social Security card, check the status of an application, estimate future benefits, and manage the benefits you already receive. To learn more, visit What is an Account?

Why are you making this change?

This change will simplify your sign-in experience and better align with federal authentication standards while providing safe and secure access to our online services.

What do I need to do?

To avoid any disruptions in accessing our online services we encourage you to transition your account now by signing in to your account with your username and password. Our online instructions will guide you through the process of creating or signing in to an existing Login.gov account.

Information about Login.gov and ID.me

Today I received an email stating that my “submission status has been updated” and there was a box for me to click on to sign into my account.

I signed in using Login.gov. I’m confused because the menu does not show anything about my submission. How and where am I supposed to go to find out when I’m getting my social security payment??

P.S. signing in is quick and easy, but it’s useless if we can’t access important information!!

None of my three email addresses seem to match SSN’s records, even though I have a password in my files that I entered in Sept of 2018.

Further, when I pulled up the Blog info, the suggestions for newsletters were for localized in California. I moved from California to Kansas in 2007, then to Missouri in 2018. I probably created my password of record when I changed the bank to which my monthly payment was to be, and is, deposited. probably when I created that password.

Today I received a scam Social Security email, from neritankodrax184@gmail.com. In trying to report that to SSA I have discovered that that I can’t access my SSA account. Please advise.

Does not simplify. This tortuous process has been going on for several years and is rife with confusion and dead links. I’m leaving this on the Social Security site but my main dealings have been with MyHealtheVet which went from a one-click log-in to 3-click login. It is atrocious. My login.gov login credentials are with the Trusted Traveler Program. This is NOT WORKING.

I sign in to my social security with a user name and password but I don’t remember when I created my account . But I went to the .gov sign in and it says enter your email and your password . I don’t get it are they asking for the password to my email or my password to my social security account or a new one that I haven’t added to my already 150 passwords I am supposed to remember . It seems to me the more agencies that have access to my social security account the more chances I have of being tipped off .can’t u just keep my account secure and leave it the way I trust it.

Your web page offers a video for step by step instructions to transition to Login.gov.
It would be more helpful if you offered written instructions as a ready reference as I step through whatever procedure is required.
So far, I have not found a web page with any instructions to connect from Login.gov to SSA.gov.
    Strange world we live in.

Please help – I have been struggling with the login for months and need to get the 1099 from 2023 for 2024 taxes. I already had to file an extension and the reset code that i got in the USPS mail – to reset my original log-in doesn’t work. I don’t know what to do next?
