Social Security Administration LogoIf you created a Social Security username more than 3 years ago, you will need to transition to a new or existing Login.gov account or use an ID.me account to have continuous access to our online services. We recently announced this news in a press release.

For step-by-step instructions on how to make the transition, watch this video. We also encourage you to visit our Frequently Asked Questions for Transitioning Your Social Security Username to Login.gov.

Beginning June 1, 2024, people who sign in to their personal my Social Security account with their username are given the option to transition to Login.gov. This blog provides additional information and guidance to help you with problems you may encounter. We’re also going to provide answers to some of the questions we’ve heard.

Who does this affect?

If you created your free and secure my Social Security account on or after September 18, 2021, no action is necessary because you already have the right setup. If you are among the 46 million people who created an account before September 18, 2021 and use your username and password to access Social Security online services today, you will need to create or use an existing account with one of our two Credential Service Providers (CSP) – Login.gov or ID.me.

Is there a deadline?

While you can still use a username and password to sign in to your personal my Social Security account right now, this option is going away later this year. At that time, you will be required to have a Login.gov or ID.me account if you want to continue to access your personal my Social Security and our many other convenient online services.

A personal my Social Security account provides tools for everyone, whether you receive benefits or not. You can use your account to request a replacement Social Security card, check the status of an application, estimate future benefits, and manage the benefits you already receive. To learn more, visit What is an Account?

Why are you making this change?

This change will simplify your sign-in experience and better align with federal authentication standards while providing safe and secure access to our online services.

What do I need to do?

To avoid any disruptions in accessing our online services we encourage you to transition your account now by signing in to your account with your username and password. Our online instructions will guide you through the process of creating or signing in to an existing Login.gov account.

Information about Login.gov and ID.me

Login.gov is your one government account for simple, secure, and private access to participating government agencies. You can use your Login.gov account to access your Social Security benefit information, services, and other information. And you can use that same Login.gov account to manage other government benefits and services. For support, visit the Login.gov Help Center.

ID.me is a single sign-on provider that also meets the U.S. government’s online identity proofing and authentication requirements. You can use one ID.me account to access government and private services. For support – Go to the ID.me Help Center.

I do not want to have to create an account with YouTube. Any videos should be accessible on the SSA site. I don’t want to have to maintain it or deal with their spam.

Why is it so impossible for a government agency to write simple instructions in plain English?

Website is a nightmare. My husband and I have the same email address. It worked fine with our original accounts. We tried creating a new account with the log-in .gov and I used it to set his up and now I can’t use it to do the same for me. To top it off I can’t get into his old OR new account now. It also was logging me into his account instead of mine even though I signed him out. Bottom line-I can still access my old account but can’t access either his old or new one.

Hello, Carla. Thanks for reading our blog. We understand your frustration. However, each person must set up their own Login.gov account with their own personal email address – not an email that you share with someone else. We hope this is helpful.

I am having the same issue. I handle my account, my husband’s, my mom & my sister. Now I messed up emails with login information. Why must you change the process if it works. Now I’m locked out of my account. My mom didn’t receive her social security this month because I think I screwed something up
Please help. I’ve tried to call & I was on hold more than 2 hours & hadto hang up

I wanted my Social Security retirement money to be taxed before receiving it to my bank account. How will I contact Social Security to do that for me?

Hi Noel. Thanks for reading our blog and for your question. You’ll find information about how to withhold income taxes from your Social Security benefits here. At this time, you’re not able to submit your W-4V Voluntary Withholding Request form online. However, we’re working with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) on a process that would allow us to accept tax withholding requests over the phone. To learn more about this and other recent customer service improvements, check out Commissioner O’Malley’s First 100 days Accomplishments. We hope this helps.

I pay out of pocket $175.00 a month for my Medicare and I don’t use the service at all that justifies me being charged $175 a month out of my SSI payment !!! Bidenomics SUCKED away any little money I used to have at the end of paying my monthly bills. HHS stopped paying for me the SSI payment of the $175. I support my family of 3 on very little money. We’re barely surviving .

Hi Don. Thanks for reading our blog. You may qualify to get help from your state through the Medicare Savings Programs. You’ll apply for Medicare Savings Programs through your state. When you apply, your state determines which program(s) you qualify for. Even if you don’t think you qualify, you should still apply. You can find more information here. You should also contact your local Medicare SHIP (State Health Insurance Program) to discuss your options. We hope this helps.

My husband and I are well into our senior years and only use 1 email address. This does not allow me to switch to Login.gov because we have been informed that each account needs it’s own email address! Please advise me on how I can transition tp Login.gov

        Stacy,

It sounds like your question wasn’t really answered. If you’re looking for a free way to have another email account, I would first check with your internet provider. Most providers allow you to create more than one email account, some up to 10.

Another option is Google’s gmail.com email accounts are free. You can use an email address created there for the separate one you need to log in here.

I hope this helped. If I misunderstood what you were asking, then please forgive me. I was just trying to help.

I have been trying to sign in. I don’t get the code within the time allowed. Then it comes back as an error… ugh! I then reguested a call with the code and I have been waiting at least 40m minutes and again the time has expired.
I call and the wait time is 22 minutes…..

My SSA sign in is more than 4 years and I am unable to access the current account.
Claims it doesn’t recognize my password

      Hi, Marcia.

The SSA requires you to change your password periodically for security purposes. Four years is a long stretch.

I would just go back and type in your email address and then click on ‘Forgot password?’ It will then take you through the steps to create that new password. Once you’ve created it, it will likely have you do a complete sign in again with new the new password.
