Social Security Administration LogoIf you created a Social Security username more than 3 years ago, you will need to transition to a new or existing Login.gov account or use an ID.me account to have continuous access to our online services. We recently announced this news in a press release.

For step-by-step instructions on how to make the transition, watch this video. We also encourage you to visit our Frequently Asked Questions for Transitioning Your Social Security Username to Login.gov.

Beginning June 1, 2024, people who sign in to their personal my Social Security account with their username are given the option to transition to Login.gov. This blog provides additional information and guidance to help you with problems you may encounter. We’re also going to provide answers to some of the questions we’ve heard.

Who does this affect?

If you created your free and secure my Social Security account on or after September 18, 2021, no action is necessary because you already have the right setup. If you are among the 46 million people who created an account before September 18, 2021 and use your username and password to access Social Security online services today, you will need to create or use an existing account with one of our two Credential Service Providers (CSP) – Login.gov or ID.me.

Is there a deadline?

While you can still use a username and password to sign in to your personal my Social Security account right now, this option is going away later this year. At that time, you will be required to have a Login.gov or ID.me account if you want to continue to access your personal my Social Security and our many other convenient online services.

A personal my Social Security account provides tools for everyone, whether you receive benefits or not. You can use your account to request a replacement Social Security card, check the status of an application, estimate future benefits, and manage the benefits you already receive. To learn more, visit What is an Account?

Why are you making this change?

This change will simplify your sign-in experience and better align with federal authentication standards while providing safe and secure access to our online services.

What do I need to do?

To avoid any disruptions in accessing our online services we encourage you to transition your account now by signing in to your account with your username and password. Our online instructions will guide you through the process of creating or signing in to an existing Login.gov account.

Information about Login.gov and ID.me

Login.gov is your one government account for simple, secure, and private access to participating government agencies. You can use your Login.gov account to access your Social Security benefit information, services, and other information. And you can use that same Login.gov account to manage other government benefits and services. For support, visit the Login.gov Help Center.

ID.me is a single sign-on provider that also meets the U.S. government’s online identity proofing and authentication requirements. You can use one ID.me account to access government and private services. For support – Go to the ID.me Help Center.

The site is not working right. I try to get messages and it takes me back to the sign-in page. If you’re doing maintenance, say so. I currently have both a Login.Gov and ID.me account. If I need to merge, let me know.

I’m having a similar situation as
    William E. is having.
I am trying to upload documents and keep going around and around with my login in, never going back to social security. I’ve had to set up a physical appointment. Is there trouble with ID.Me or the Got. Log in?

I hope people read all the information before checking ANY “AGREE TO TERMS ” box!

You will be agreeing to allowing them [a ronline reporting site] other than the US SSA DEPT complete access to your credit report on Experian as well as your entire digital footprint of your cellphones and wireless devices!!! There’s no reason they should be forcing us to allow this!

Something smells here!! Especially since everyone is having issues logging in and no one is answering the phone #’s provided! Given the fact that one Admin is leaving at the same time they already changing how we access our account & seeking our personal footprints? No! Ask questions!

I have a login.gov account but SSA will not accept it for access to my SSA account. Whether I choose having nor not having activation code, I get a “you already have and existing account” but I can’t link it. I NEED YOU TO MAIL ME AN ACTIVATION CODE! But your website does not give me the option to ask for it, Please advise!

I received an email from SSA yesterday stating “you have a new message at My Social Security and must log in to view the new message in your account.” I have NEVER had an issue logging into my account until today. 7-8 attempts all failures receiving my code via email. After calling SSA and waiting 50 minutes for a real person I will have to wait another 10 days to “reset” my info. All my info was correct, the phone rep told me she could see online I tried to sign in and an email with code was supposedly sent to me (many times) yet I never received it!!! Once I saw that were 128 pages of comments/complaints , I knew I wasn’t the only one with this issue.

I concur with those who expressed they are not able to get in to use the Social Security site. I have tried to sign in using both the ID.me and LOGIN.gov. Neither works. It only sends me back to the sign in page.

I live overseas and have applied for my U.S. social securities benefit. I cannot log in to my account to check on my application. I cannot find an alternative way to contact the SSA. What do I do?

I live overseas and have an account (login.gov) I was able to log into the system a year ago and now it just doesnt work. Keep getting kicked back to the start page. Emailed support and they (who ever they are) sends an email that the issue has “been resoveld”. Horrible system. I am stuck, no help, no one to call.

Since this change to login procedure, it’s impossible to log into my account. Prior to this security update, I have never had an issue or problem logging into my account. A little over 3 hours on hold accomplished nothing more than wasting my time. I just wanted to update my new phone number. It never used to be this way ever before
