How to Transition Your Social Security Account to Login.gov
Reading Time: 3 MinutesLast Updated: August 23, 2024
If you created a Social Security username more than 3 years ago, you will need to transition to a new or existing Login.gov account or use an ID.me account to have continuous access to our online services. We recently announced this news in a press release.
For step-by-step instructions on how to make the transition, watch this video. We also encourage you to visit our Frequently Asked Questions for Transitioning Your Social Security Username to Login.gov.
Beginning June 1, 2024, people who sign in to their personal my Social Security account with their username are given the option to transition to Login.gov. This blog provides additional information and guidance to help you with problems you may encounter. We’re also going to provide answers to some of the questions we’ve heard.
Who does this affect?
If you created your free and secure my Social Security account on or after September 18, 2021, no action is necessary because you already have the right setup. If you are among the 46 million people who created an account before September 18, 2021 and use your username and password to access Social Security online services today, you will need to create or use an existing account with one of our two Credential Service Providers (CSP) – Login.gov or ID.me.
Is there a deadline?
While you can still use a username and password to sign in to your personal my Social Security account right now, this option is going away later this year. At that time, you will be required to have a Login.gov or ID.me account if you want to continue to access your personal my Social Security and our many other convenient online services.
A personal my Social Security account provides tools for everyone, whether you receive benefits or not. You can use your account to request a replacement Social Security card, check the status of an application, estimate future benefits, and manage the benefits you already receive. To learn more, visit What is an Account?
Why are you making this change?
This change will simplify your sign-in experience and better align with federal authentication standards while providing safe and secure access to our online services.
What do I need to do?
To avoid any disruptions in accessing our online services we encourage you to transition your account now by signing in to your account with your username and password. Our online instructions will guide you through the process of creating or signing in to an existing Login.gov account.

the new login system and double security is terrible. I do not like it at all. The options for double security are not operator friendly when you don’t have those systems available. I liked it when I could get a text msg and enter a code to get in…..

Hi, Ive got a problem with signing into my account with an email that I no longer have access too.
I’ve created a new account that I’m able to access, however I’m wondering if there’s a way I can request to get access to my old account or if I can have my new account linked to my old account.. or if there’s anything else I am able to accomplish to access any of the services within this website

I finally was able to change my password on my account, but now it won’t let me change my phone number associated with that account and so when sends me a verification code, it’s sending to an old phone number and obviously not getting it.

I’ve been in SSDI for quite some time and now rolled into SS I have had way too much trouble with waiting on the phone, being hung up on, no answer. I’ve also emailed them and no answer!? I have to get someone to unlock it

Looking over the Login instructions under the security guidelines it is recommended two sign in instead of one. My concern is the application download recommended. What is the downside of downloading an unknown security application as part of the two part security system. I currently like the cell phone text message as one of the recommended items on the list

I can’t log into my Social Security account because I filed a disability claim. Can’t do anything. I need to file for Medicare as I turn 65 in January. Obviously I need health coverage as I am disabled. What can I do?..Very disappointed and frustrated and getting nervous. I need coverage.

got a call asking if I got my new medical health card. I received a new supplement but he wanted to know if I received the original card. I had not and he wanted to verify all info on my card. The name on my phone was Placers not social security. We did not answer the questions. was this a legit call?
Christine B.
Probably not. SSA contracts by mail not phone usually. It’s something I’ve learned.

I waited for over an hour trying to submit my social security application. To get my money back. Said it was processing my application and not to hit the next button…. So I stopped hitting the next button and my session was disconnected due to inactivity!!!!! Now when I go back in I am unable to access the application I already filled out and did submit! Beyond frustrating!!!

Hi, Sue. We understand your frustration. For your security, we do not have access to private information in this venue. To speak with a representative about your application, you can call us at 1-800-772-1213, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. We hope this helps.

Hi, Darla. We care about our customers and are working as fast as we can. The length of time it takes to receive a decision on a disability claim depends on several factors, including the nature of the disability and how quickly we can obtain medical evidence from doctors or other medical sources. Sometimes your claim is randomly selected for a quality assurance review of the decision. For more information about checking the status of your application visit our application or appeal status webpage. We hope this helps.
