Get Your Social Security Benefit Statement (SSA-1099)

Tax season is approaching, and Social Security has made replacing your annual Benefit Statement even easier. The Benefit Statement is also known as the SSA-1099 or the SSA-1042S. Now you can get a copy of your 1099 anytime and anywhere you want using our online services.

A Social Security 1099 is a tax form Social Security mails each year in January to people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received from Social Security in the previous year so you know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on your tax return.

If you live in the United States and you need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, simply go online and request an instant, printable replacement form through your personal my Social Security account.

A replacement SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S is available for the previous tax year after February 1.

If you already have a my Social Security account, you can log in to your online account to view and print your SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can save the document on your computer or laptop or even email it. If you don’t have a my Social Security account, creating one is very easy to do and usually takes less than 10 minutes.

If you receive benefits or have Medicare, your my Social Security account is also the best way to:

  • Get your benefit verification letter;
  • Check your benefit and payment information;
  • Change your address and phone number;
  • Change your direct deposit information;
  • Request a replacement Medicare card; or
  • Report your wages if you work and receive Social Security disability insurance or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits.

If you’re a noncitizen who lives outside of the United States and you received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we will send you form SSA-1042S in the mail. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

      Hi, Shaquiva. It sounds like you are referring to the SSA-1099 which shows the amount of benefits paid to SSA beneficiaries during last year. The SSA-1099 is mailed by January 31 each year. If for any reason you do not receive your SSA-1099 in the mail, you can request a replacement SSA-1099/1042S for Tax Year 2018 by visiting your personal my Social Security account. Thanks!

    My wife Anne T. Olsen, age 80, SSN *** – ** – ***, has not received her 2018 SSA income statement yet (March 3, 2019). I need it to prepare income tax. I tried to set up a my account for her but failed.

      Hi, Ronald. Unfortunately, you can only create a my Social Security account using your own personal information and for your own exclusive use. You cannot create or use an account on behalf of another person, even if you have that person’s written permission. You wife can contact us at 1-800-772-1213, Monday through Friday, between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., for assistance. Generally, she will have a shorter wait if she calls later in the day. She can also contact her local Social Security office. We hope this helps.

    I have tried to open my online account and it was unable to make it. More of that, I have received notice of “suspension”.
    I think, SSA has to make the process of connection with own account a little bit simpler, or give the option to use alternative to a password possibility to go through the “sign in” process. Not just sent a short massage: “suspended your account” notification.

    I tried to set up an account but denied because it cannot verify it on what is on data base. I have no mortgage or any loan. I have credit cards from AT&T and CITI. We did not get our 1099.

    We have not received our 1099 for my inlaws that are in a nursing home and do not have continued access to a computer and do not want an account. How do I then get the 1099. They have not been received as of today, March 3.

      Hi, Diane. We only recognize a designated representative payee for handling Social Security funds for another person. If your in laws are not capable of managing and directing her Social Security benefits, someone should consider applying to be her representative payee.     How do I get a replacement 1099 form for my Mom. According to your website, I cannot set up an online account for her even though I am her representative. She is 91 years old and does not have a computer

      Hi, Milly. You are correct. You can only create a my Social Security account using your own personal information and for your own exclusive use. You cannot create or use an account on behalf of another person, even if you have that person’s written permission.
