Tax season is approaching, and Social Security has made replacing your annual Benefit Statement even easier. The Benefit Statement is also known as the SSA-1099 or the SSA-1042S. Now you can get a copy of your 1099 anytime and anywhere you want using our online services.

A Social Security 1099 is a tax form Social Security mails each year in January to people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received from Social Security in the previous year so you know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on your tax return.

If you live in the United States and you need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, simply go online and request an instant, printable replacement form through your personal my Social Security account.

A replacement SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S is available for the previous tax year after February 1.

If you already have a my Social Security account, you can log in to your online account to view and print your SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can save the document on your computer or laptop or even email it. If you don’t have a my Social Security account, creating one is very easy to do and usually takes less than 10 minutes.

If you receive benefits or have Medicare, your my Social Security account is also the best way to:

  • Get your benefit verification letter;

  • Change your address and phone number;
  • Change your direct deposit information;
  • Request a replacement Medicare card; or
  • Report your wages if you work and receive Social Security disability insurance or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits.

    I’m 80 years old. I don’t remember what happened yesterday much less 6 years ago. My Certificate of Title to my toyota does not list who we purchased from. Also, the phone number listed that is correct in security questions is one of our cell phones. The other phone previously mentioned is our land line. I need a copy of my 1918 yearly statement (I have my husband’s) to complete filing taxes. Please help !!!!

    The benefit I would receive at the age of 70 has a disclaimer that It would need to continue the same income from age 66 to 70. If I retire before 70 my income will decrease . I would like to wait until 70 for my social security but retire at 67. How is it calculated if my income is less from ages 67-70?? I would only postpone social security because I will receive more.

    • V.V.

      Hi Dana, thank you for the question. A Social Security retirement benefit is calculated by using your highest 35 years of earnings. If you do not have 35 years of earnings, we will use all of the earnings on your record and factor in an annual total of $0.00 earnings for each of the remaining years. By delaying receiving your benefits beyond your full retirement age, you are receiving a higher benefit amount than you would have at age 66. Your year of birth and the number of months you delay determines how much your benefit increases. See our Delayed Retirement Credits web page for details.

      Social Security has an online calculator called a Retirement Estimator that provides immediate retirement benefit estimates based on your actual Social Security earnings record. Plus, it also allows you to create “what if” scenarios. You can, for example, change your “stop work” dates or expected future earnings to create and compare different retirement alternatives.

      See our Benefits Planner: Retirement web page for more on obtaining benefit estimates.
