A Social Security 1099 is a tax form Social Security mails each year in January to people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received from Social Security in the previous year so you know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on your tax return.

I have wasted more than 1 hr trying to set up a mySocialSecurity account. It refuses to accept ANY value I enter for a username, but doesn’t tell me until after I have twice entered my e-mail address.
I need to know how much my benefit is BEFORE deductions so I can apply for help with Rx medication. I must apply very soon.

I have been trying since July to determine if I am receiving the best SS option. Have submitted necessary paperwork to Cambridge Mass office. Left messages with the case manager many times with no response. What should I do now?

PS: you have a very non-user friendly system. The Cambridge office told me my request could not be handled online but the office route isn’t working either and the phone system seems designed to discourage callers.

My daughter was on SSI and is now deceased. How do I get 1099 or correct form to file her income tax?

    • A.C.

Hi, John. We are sorry to hear about your loss. The SSA-1099 is mailed to the last address in our records and is intended for the spouse or executor of the deceased. If you did not receive the benefit statement, the executor will need to go into the local Social Security office with proof of death and proof of executorship. An SSA-1099 can also be given to someone receiving benefits on the deceased beneficiary’s record such as a spouse, parent, or child of the deceased. If you need more information, call our toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) and ask a representative for assistance.
