Reading Time: 2 MinutesLast Updated: March 14, 2019
Now that it’s tax season, you might be gathering all of your forms and documentation from the previous year. Sometimes getting all that material together — receipts for donations, business expenses, and travel — can be overwhelming. And losing one vital piece can take up time that you might not be able to spare.
The Social Security 1099 (SSA-1099) or Benefit Statement is a tax form Social Security mails each year in January. It shows the total amount of benefits you received from Social Security in the previous year, so you know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on your tax return. Luckily, Social Security has you covered. If you live in the United States and you need a copy of your SSA-1099 or 1042S tax form, simply go online and get an instant, printable copy of your form with a my Social Security account.
A Social Security1042S (SSA-1042S) is for a noncitizen who lives outside the United States and received or repaid Social Security benefits last year.

I am the executor of my wife’s parents estates. They both passed away in 2020. I have not recieved 1099’s for either of their accounts. I tried their last address (assisted living facility) and it’s not there. Can’t legally get it online. Local SS office forwards my call to national SS office. National office puts me on hold for 10 minutes then drops the call. What do I do to get to get these documents.

Hi Don, thanks for using our blog. We are very sorry for your loss. The SSA-1099 is mailed in January to the last address in our records and is intended for the spouse or executor of the deceased. If you do not have access to the mail at that address, the executor will need to call the local field office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.

My mother died in April I notified Social Security when she passed. I called the SS office in December and they said they would mail the 1099 to her last address. In January I called and they told me when she died, they won’t mail out the 1099 as she has passed, in February they told me they mailed it but if it has a forwarding address to my house on the west coast they won’t forward the 1099, then I called back and was on hold for an hour and the agent disconnected me and never called back, then I called again this week and they told me I have to show proof I am her son and the person told me to send a letter to the local office with a copy of an obituary in the paper showing I am her son.
I want to get her final 1099 so I can file her final tax statement and pay any taxes due and keep getting the runaround. What proof is an obituary? SS is not clear what they need and every time I call I get a different answer.

My mother passed away in March. I received a 1099 for the money social security owed her in my name as the executor of her estate. That money was not mine alone as it is part of the estate. Do I have to claim it with my taxes or does it go on her final tax return?
V.V.
Hi Theresa, thanks for using our blog. For income tax related questions, we suggest individuals contact the IRS directly. Their toll-free number is 1-800-829-1040. We hope this helps!
