If you receive a Benefit Verification letter, sometimes called a “budget letter,” a “benefits letter,” a “proof of income letter,” or a “proof of award letter,” we have good news for you! A new standardized Benefit Verification letter is now available when you need proof of Social Security benefits, Supplemental Security Income, or Medicare.

In addition to name, date of birth, and the benefits received, the new Benefit Verification letter includes other identifiers to prevent misuse and fraud. This is an added benefit to you as proof of income for loans, housing assistance, mortgage, and other verification purposes.

The same standardized letter is also available if you need proof that you do not receive benefits, or proof that benefits are pending. If you are an individual representative payee, you can use the my Social Security Representative Payee portal to access the same standardized Benefit Verification letter online for your beneficiaries.

This new standardized Benefit Verification letter is another example of our commitment to improve our service to you.

No matter how you request your letter, whether calling our National 800 Number, your local office, the Interactive Voice Response system, or online with your personal my Social Security account, the Benefit Verification letter now contains a seamless look.

I have not received my 2021 benefits letter (form SSA-4926-SM) in the mail showing my new benefit amount. When can I expect to receive it?

    • Vonda

Hi Helen, thanks for using our blog. We will mail COLA notices throughout the month of December to retirement, survivors, and disability beneficiaries, SSI recipients, and representative payees. If you would like the notice, sooner, you can securely view and save the Social Security COLA notice online via the Message Center inside your my Social Security account in early December without waiting for the mailed notice. If you don’t have an account, create one today. We hope this helps!

i have received my proof of income letter, and i am shocked that my 1.3 percent increase amounts to $ 20.00 It has taken me a long time to decide to write to you. I think it is unfair to penalize me for having two pensions. My late husband and I paid so much every year for both of us ,moreover,he was self-employed,so we paid even more for him.
    Sincerely, Y.MALIKINA

  7. Frank G.

A friend recently received a letter from the Social Security Administration that stated at the end that he would receive the check he is due on December 2020 on January 20, 2021. What is that about? He lives off of his SS check!

    • Vonda

Hi Frank, thank you for your question. Social Security benefits are paid the month after they are due. So, for instance, if your friends benefits begin with the month of December, they will receive their first benefit payment in January. The exact payment date is determined by their date of birth. For future pay days, your friend may find the Schedule of Social Security Payments calendars useful.

  8. Joseph L.

How long does it take to start receiving my social security benefits? I filed online on 5 August 2020 and received a response that my application was received and was being processed. They said if they needed additional information from me they would contact me by phone, mail or email. It has been over 4 months now and I haven’t heard from SSA since applying. I called and wrote them almost 4 weeks ago and still no reply. What is the standard waiting time now, 4 or 5 months? Feel like I’ve been abandoned and I’m totally in the dark!
    Can someone answer my question?

    • Vonda

Hi Joseph, thanks for using our blog. Please call your local Social Security office. Look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. I would like to verify if it is a standard procedure of not introducing or identifying oneself if calling for telephone interview?

Calling from FBU Manila (Arroyo) to schedule a telephone interview retirement benefits the caller id (+44288224425) Northern Ireland.
Then during the interview was a Washington DC number (+1(202)370 6427)
I was asking for full name and direct line number but refused due to security reasons.
I rescheduled the interview until i verify…please comment on this.

    Thank you very much.
