man and woman on laptop It’s that time of year again. Preparing for tax season can seem overwhelming. Some forms and paperwork might be difficult to track down. If you misplaced your Benefits Statement or haven’t received it by the end of January, we’ve made it easy to go online to get a replacement with a personal my Social Security account.

An SSA-1099, also called a Benefit Statement, is a tax form Social Security mails each year in January to the more than 60 million people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits received from Social Security in the previous year so people know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on their tax return.

For noncitizens who live outside of the United States and received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we’ll send form SSA-1042S instead. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

If you currently live in the United States and need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, we have a way for you to get a replacement quickly and easily. Go online and get a replacement form with a personal my Social Security account.

Every worker in the United States should create a personal my Social Security account. The secure and personalized features of my Social Security are valuable tools to help Americans plan for retirement.

Trying to get a copy of my mother’s 1099 for 2018 so we can do her taxes. She lost the sent to her. She passed away April 18. I called and after about 10 minutes on phone they said I would have to call back later in the week.
Mother was not set up to do mysocialsecurity. I would rather not drive 60 miles to an office to get a copy.

    • A.C.

Hi, Janis. We are sorry to hear about your loss. The SSA-1099 is mailed to the last address in our records and is intended for the spouse or executor of the deceased. If you did not receive the benefit statement or need to receive a replacement, the executor will need to go into the local Social Security office with proof of death and proof of executorship. An SSA-1099 can also be given to someone receiving benefits on the deceased beneficiary’s record such as a spouse, parent, or child of the deceased. If you need more information, call our toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) and ask a representative for assistance. We hope this helps.

Is it possible to receive a replacement SS card online for my child?

    • L.A.

Hi Sandra. Generally, when applying for a replacement Social Security card for a child under the age of 18, we will consider the parent(s), as the proper applicant. If the child (under age 18) is physically and mentally capable of completing an in-person interview or paper application for a Social Security card, the child may file on his or her own behalf. For more information on this subject, please visit our “Social Security Number Number and Card” web page. We hope this helps!

  8. James W.

I applied on-line for social security card replacement.
Cannot complete the application because GUAM is not
listed on the pop-up, States listed on the application, which is a required entry.

    Please Fix

    • V.V.

Hi James, thank you for your question. Unfortunately, this service is not yet available if your driver’s license or identification card was issued by a U.S. territory (such as American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, or the U.S. Virgin Islands). If you cannot apply for a card online, then you can apply by mail or visit your local office with required documentation. All documents must be either originals or certified copies. To learn more on how to get a replacement card and see if you can apply online, please visit our “Social Security Number and Card” web page.

  9. Terry P.

how can i get taxes withheld from my social security now when I did not set it up to withhold when i started?

    • A.C.

Hi, Terry. Thanks for your question. In order to have taxes withheld from your Social Security benefit, you must start by printing, completing and submitting an IRS Voluntary Withholding Request Form (Form W-4V). On this form, you can choose to have 7, 10, 12, or 22 percent of your monthly benefit withheld. The Form W-4V (to withhold federal taxes from your Social Security benefits) can be returned to your local Social Security office by mail or in person. See our Benefits Planner: Withholding Income Tax From Your Social Security Benefits web page for more information. We hope this helps.

I need to have my power of attorney acknowledged by the SSA, as my mother is in long-term care at age 93. We did this paperwork last year, but it was not recorded. Additionally, her address is information needs to be updated
She does not have an email address or access to a computer for setting up a ‘my account’ process.

    • K.O.

Hello Nancy. Please note that a “Power of Attorney” does not give you legal authority to manage Social Security benefits or SSI for your mother. Since your mother is in a long-term care and needs help to manage her benefits, you may want to consider applying to become her representative payee. As a representative payee, you will have access to her records and the ability to update her account information as well as request a replacement Medicare card on her behalf. Please read our publication: A Guide For Representative Payees for more information. If you have specific questions, need to make an appointment or for additional assistance, please contact your local Social Security office or call 1-800-772-1213 Monday through Friday, between 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Generally, you’ll have a shorter wait time if you call later in the day. We hope this helps.
