man and woman on laptop It’s that time of year again. Preparing for tax season can seem overwhelming. Some forms and paperwork might be difficult to track down. If you misplaced your Benefits Statement or haven’t received it by the end of January, we’ve made it easy to go online to get a replacement with a personal my Social Security account.

An SSA-1099, also called a Benefit Statement, is a tax form Social Security mails each year in January to the more than 60 million people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits received from Social Security in the previous year so people know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on their tax return.

For noncitizens who live outside of the United States and received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we’ll send form SSA-1042S instead. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

If you currently live in the United States and need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, we have a way for you to get a replacement quickly and easily. Go online and get a replacement form with a personal my Social Security account.

Every worker in the United States should create a personal my Social Security account. The secure and personalized features of my Social Security are valuable tools to help Americans plan for retirement.

  4. pamela m.

how do I get a W4 form so I can change my withholding amount for taxes.

    • A.C.

Hi, Pamela. In order to have taxes withheld from your Social Security benefit, you must start by printing, completing and submitting an IRS Voluntary Withholding Request Form (Form W-4V). On this form, you can choose to have 7, 10, 12, or 22 percent of your monthly benefit withheld. The Form W-4V (to withhold federal taxes from your Social Security benefits) can be returned to your local Social Security office by mail or in person. See our Benefits Planner: Withholding Income Tax From Your Social Security Benefits web page for more information. Thanks!

I did not receive my Social Security W2 forms for 2018. Maybe they were accidentally sent to my home address and I do not receive them unless they are addressed to my PO Box 2194 Estes Park CO.
I can also access them on my compute email address.

    Thank you!

I am a US citizen living in Mexico. I need a replacement SSA-1099. I also want to change my address as I moved last year. I called the SSA office and tried to change my address and was told it was not needed but I am not sure if I was given the correct address. I tried to open a my social security account but it will not take my Mexican address. Please let me know as soon as possible how to get these matters solved. Thank you. P.S. I would appreciate a landline number that I can talk to an actual person. I cannot call 1-800 or 1-866 numbers from here. I will pay for the call if you can provide me with an area code number.
