man and woman on laptop It’s that time of year again. Preparing for tax season can seem overwhelming. Some forms and paperwork might be difficult to track down. If you misplaced your Benefits Statement or haven’t received it by the end of January, we’ve made it easy to go online to get a replacement with a personal my Social Security account.

An SSA-1099, also called a Benefit Statement, is a tax form Social Security mails each year in January to the more than 60 million people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits received from Social Security in the previous year so people know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on their tax return.

For noncitizens who live outside of the United States and received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we’ll send form SSA-1042S instead. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

If you currently live in the United States and need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, we have a way for you to get a replacement quickly and easily. Go online and get a replacement form with a personal my Social Security account.

Every worker in the United States should create a personal my Social Security account. The secure and personalized features of my Social Security are valuable tools to help Americans plan for retirement.

I have tried several times and it simply does not work. I get the message”cannot process your request”. I do not get the SSA-1099 form or a benefits statement. I do not know the 2018 benefit and have no information for 2019. My wife does not get the information either. We are totally in the dark. I can not file my tax return without the information.

I never received my W2 form for 2018……I called the ss office, stayed on the phone for 55 min., someone finally answered and hung up on me while I was speaking…..very rude!

  8. Susan P.

I did not get a 2018 Tax Statement and my accountant is waiting. Thank you. Please send to my new address and confirm. My SS Account refuses to recognize my changed password every time I go online. It says I am successful and then when I log on with the new # it says it is wrong, always. Please send to:

  9. Linda H.

Have already filed 2018 tax returns but need to have money taken out each month of social security to help pay for next years income tax refunds

    • A.C.

Hi, Linda. Thank you for your comment. In order to have taxes withheld from your Social Security benefit, you must start by printing, completing and submitting an IRS Voluntary Withholding Request Form (Form W-4V). On this form, you can choose to have 7, 10, 12, or 22 percent of your monthly benefit withheld. Form W-4V (to withhold federal taxes from your Social Security benefits) can be returned to your local Social Security office by mail or in person. See our Benefits Planner: Withholding Income Tax From Your Social Security Benefits web page for more information. We hope this helps.
