Get a Replacement Social Security Tax Form Online With Ease
Reading Time: 1 MinuteLast Updated: November 3, 2023
It’s that time of year again. Preparing for tax season can seem overwhelming. Some forms and paperwork might be difficult to track down. If you misplaced your Benefits Statement or haven’t received it by the end of January, we’ve made it easy to go online to get a replacement with a personal my Social Security account.
An SSA-1099, also called a Benefit Statement, is a tax form Social Security mails each year in January to the more than 60 million people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits received from Social Security in the previous year so people know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on their tax return.
For noncitizens who live outside of the United States and received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we’ll send form SSA-1042S instead. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
If you currently live in the United States and need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, we have a way for you to get a replacement quickly and easily. Go online and get a replacement form with a personal my Social Security account.
Every worker in the United States should create a personal my Social Security account. The secure and personalized features of my Social Security are valuable tools to help Americans plan for retirement.

How can I get a copy of my Benefit Amount for 2019? My wife received her new benefit amount for 2019 (Form SSA-4926-SM) but I have not received mine. I called the phone number listed on the form for assistance, but they can’t help me.

I am not able to sign up for on-line access for my 99-year old mother’s account
and
I am not able to request a duplicate 1099 with a written request
so
how do you propose I receive this document?
A.C.
Hi, Mary. We are sorry to hear of your difficulty in trying to help your mother change her account information with us and obtain a replacement SSA-1099. Our current policy does not allow people to set up my Social Security accounts for others. We need to confirm that you are who you say you are, and that you are a proper representative payee under our rules, before you can access any of our services on your mother’s behalf. We understand how inconvenient this may be for you, but hope you understand our role in protecting everyone’s personal information. Since it sounds like your mother has trouble managing her Social Security account, you may be interested in applying to become your mother’s representative payee, which is different than Power of Attorney. If approved to serve as your mother’s representative payee, it will make it easier for you in the future to update Social Security information for her.
If you are interested in applying to be a representative payee, you should read our publication, A Guide for Representative Payees, to understand a payee’s responsibilities. If you have specific questions, or to make an appointment, please call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. to speak to one of our representatives. Or you can contact your local Social Security office. Generally, you’ll have a shorter wait time if you call later in the day. We hope this helps!

My father passed away in 2018 and we didn’t get his w2 from S.S.,how do I get it?
A.C.
Hi, A Jones. We are sorry to hear about your loss. It sounds like you are referring to the SSA-1099. The SSA-1099 is mailed to the last address in our records and is intended for the spouse or executor of the deceased. If you do not have access to the mail at that address, the executor will need to go into the local Social Security office with proof of death and proof of executorship. An SSA-1099 can also be given to someone receiving benefits on the deceased beneficiary’s record such as a spouse, parent, or child of the deceased. If you need more information, call our toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) and ask a representative for assistance. We hope this helps.

I’m interested in changing the amount of taxes taken out of my Social Security checks. What do I do in order to do this?
A.C.
Hi, Gertrude. Thank you for your question. In order to have taxes withheld from your Social Security benefit, you must start by printing, completing and submitting an IRS Voluntary Withholding Request Form (Form W-4V). On this form, you can choose to have 7, 10, 12, or 22 percent of your monthly benefit withheld. Form W-4V (to withhold federal taxes from your Social Security benefits) can be returned to your local Social Security office by mail or in person. See our Benefits Planner: Withholding Income Tax From Your Social Security Benefits web page for more information. We hope this helps.

A.C.
Hi, Wendy. The SSA-1099 is mailed to the last address in our records. Because of privacy and security concerns, Social Security cannot speak to you about your mother’s benefits. If your mother is not capable of managing and directing her Social Security benefits, someone should consider applying to be her representative payee.
