man and woman on laptop It’s that time of year again. Preparing for tax season can seem overwhelming. Some forms and paperwork might be difficult to track down. If you misplaced your Benefits Statement or haven’t received it by the end of January, we’ve made it easy to go online to get a replacement with a personal my Social Security account.

An SSA-1099, also called a Benefit Statement, is a tax form Social Security mails each year in January to the more than 60 million people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits received from Social Security in the previous year so people know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on their tax return.

For noncitizens who live outside of the United States and received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we’ll send form SSA-1042S instead. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

If you currently live in the United States and need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, we have a way for you to get a replacement quickly and easily. Go online and get a replacement form with a personal my Social Security account.

Every worker in the United States should create a personal my Social Security account. The secure and personalized features of my Social Security are valuable tools to help Americans plan for retirement.

Can I get a copy of the 2017 e-filed taxes that were done by an accountant? I am in a retirement home, unable to get reply from accountant – I cannot access that information. Thank you so much!

Hi, Barbara. For any income tax questions, you will need to contact the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Their toll-free number is 1-800-829-1040. We hope this helps.

    • V.V.

Hi Robin, thank you for using our blog. You might be referring to the SSA-1099. Social Security mails the SSA-1099 each year in January to people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received from Social Security in the previous year so you know how much Social Security income to report to IRS on your tax return.

A replacement SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S is typically available for the previous tax year after February 1. You can request a replacement form SSA-1099 for 2017 online using your my Social Security account. If you do not already have an account, you can create one. Once you are logged in to your account, select the “Replacement Documents” tab. I need to replace a lost social security card for my son that is 17 years old. I am in Miami, Florida. How do I do this?

    • A.C.

Thanks for your question, Nora. Generally, when applying for a replacement Social Security card for a child under the age of 18, we consider the parent(s) or step-parent with custody, as the proper applicant. For information on how to obtain a replacement Social Security card, visit our Frequently Asked Questions. You will need to present documents proving your identity, your children’s identities and citizenship status (if not already established), and evidence of your relationship to, or responsibility for, your children. You can use birth certificates to prove your children’s age or citizenship. But you cannot use it as proof of identity. You can mail or bring your documents and completed application to your local office or local Social Security Card Center. We hope this helps.
